oh no, it's only the second day of #WomenInTranslationMonth #WITMonth but already there is at least one list of recommended translations where there is ONE single token woman writer translated from Chinese and of course it is always by a White translator

藤井太洋, Taiyo Fujii (taiyo@ostatus.taiyolab.com)'s status on Thursday, 03-Aug-2023 08:48:36 JST 藤井太洋, Taiyo Fujii @yilinwriter I think editors as you say is not the poor Chinese reader but also the poor literary readers.
I have many translation publisher editor friends in Japan. they’re often not specialist of the translation languages which those are their handling Portugal, Korean or other dozens of languages, but they often point translation mistakes with reading translations.

Yilin Wang (yilinwriter@wandering.shop)'s status on Thursday, 03-Aug-2023 08:48:37 JST Yilin Wang I think on the SFF sides he managed to do a lot and it has really helped but there is a long history of white people dominating the field for many decades. Also many editors don't know Chinese and then they randomly edit and cut and change things and it makes it very poor quality.

Yilin Wang (yilinwriter@wandering.shop)'s status on Thursday, 03-Aug-2023 11:44:18 JST Yilin Wang @taiyo thank you! I am not sure if you heard but unfortunately the British Museum recently stole my translations of Chinese feminist poet Qiu Jin (秋瑾)and used them without permission, credit, or pay in an exhibit over a month.

藤井太洋, Taiyo Fujii (taiyo@ostatus.taiyolab.com)'s status on Thursday, 03-Aug-2023 12:10:58 JST 藤井太洋, Taiyo Fujii @yilinwriter BTW, in Japan, many editors and writers ask me which is better for translating works by Japanese translator who can read well or English native translator who can write well.
Because they are lazy not to hope to negotiate with English translators.
My answer is simple translator should be a good writer. Around commercial fiction, it’s not necessary “Native”, but they should be a good write better than original writer. -

Yilin Wang (yilinwriter@wandering.shop)'s status on Thursday, 03-Aug-2023 13:53:07 JST Yilin Wang @taiyo I agree that being a good writer is the most important. However, "good" is very loaded, and cultural knowledge and understanding are just as important as language skills
