DNA breaks down after 10,000 years, frozen or not, right?BowserNoodle ☦️ likes this. -

BowserNoodle ☦️ (bowsacnoodle@poa.st)'s status on Saturday, 29-Jul-2023 18:36:58 JST BowserNoodle ☦️ @sj_zero @lain Nematodes are extremely hardy. One of the reasons people get trichinosis is that even a standard home freezer isn't enough to kill all trichinella. A lot of parasitic worms go into a cyst stage and can just wait for seemingly forever for proper conditions. Honestly they're incredibly gross creatures and their prevalence makes me think we really need to incorporate more antiparasitic stuff into the Western diet. -

sj_zero (sj_zero@social.fbxl.net)'s status on Saturday, 29-Jul-2023 18:37:02 JST sj_zero I saw the story and I wonder how the DNA managed to be preserved all this time? Typically after 1000 years 75% of genetic code is degraded, and that seems like you shouldn't wake up after that. I know some unicellular life doesn't grow new cells unless it reproduces so could probably live without DNA for some time, but I don't think nematodes are single celled organisms.
