Got #Kitten’s¹ secret generation working in the browser as part of the last piece of the puzzle I’m working on right now for deploying #SmallWeb² places via #Domain³.

Your secret is the key to your identity on the Small Web (or at least to some aspect of your identity you wish to portray or explore at a given Small Web place). It’s an ed25519 private key base256 encoded and presented using a well-known set of emoji.

      What is the Small Web?
Updated June 19th, 2023 Sorry, your browser doesn't support embedded videos. But that doesn’t mean you can’t watch it! You can download Small Is Beautiful #23 directly, and watch it with your favourite video player. Small Is Beautiful (Oct, 2022): What is the Small Web and why do we need it? Today, I want to introduce you to a concept – and a vision for the future of our species in the digital and networked age – that I’ve spoken about for a while but never specifically written about:

@grob Exactly ;) You shouldn’t be handling it any way but to paste it into your password manager and fill it in from there when you need it.

The whole idea is that it’s nigh-on impossible to write on a post-it note and stick on your monitor :)

(The final page will also lead to information what a password manager is and why it’s important to have one and have some recommendations to lead folks in the right direction.)

@aral what is the advantage of the emoji representation? (besides looking friendly :blobcat_mlem: ) Could I just copy it into a, say, KeePassXC text field? I'd be worried I need to handle it somehow specially.

@grob Good feedback, thanks. (This is just the very first draft so there will many, many revisions, I’m sure.) :)

@aral maybe add "just copy paste the emojis" in the description? It would have confused me otherwise, I did not really know that works. But a really clever idea to make it look nice!

@shauny Yeah, we can look at optimisations later. My goal right now is to realise something that doesn’t exist yet (a peer to peer web). I look forward to working on the myriad of ways we can improve the experience incrementally once we have that foundation.

@aral have you thought about using Passkeys? This is cute but seems a little backwards when Passkeys exist now.

@cyberlyra Thank you so much. I’m breaking things daily at the moment but I’ll be sure to ping you when I don’t feel like I’d be wasting your time :) Really appreciate it.

@aral Aral, I love this project. Let me know when/if you need people to run and test it out. I have been told I am a great bug-finder ;)
