We recently bought a Nintendo Switch. It's the first console I've ever bought.

Obviously one wants to use the online shop. I register a Hong Kong account. The eShop menus are now in Chinese only. Fine.

Obviously one wants to run the emulators and get access to classic NES, GB, GBA, N64 games that I've heard about but never played. The annual fee isn't crazy! I pay it.

All the games are in Japanese! There aren't that many games. Most of them are RPGs with walls of text.

People on YouTube are playing games in English. I guess they are using the US eShop. I register an account in the US. I try to pay another subscription. It needs a US credit card.

      Sigh.

I have a Swedish credit card. I don't actually have the plastic (because they want to send it to my official Swedish address and I don't have one) and I don't know my current expiry date, but it's still successfully paying for a Swedish SIM card and some other minor recurring costs.

So maybe I'll try again later to get a Swedish eShop account with the card I kind of have. Or maybe the Swedish eShop is less picky and accepts a HK credit card. We will see. The saga continues.

@Whovian9369 So you only paid once? How does that work?

The emulator is installed with your home account and then you play the emulator with your foreign account?

I *think* I tried that but I'll check again. I may just have gone straight to the eShop.

@clacke For example, I can play the Japanese NES or GBA game selection with my non-Japanese Switch Online subscription!

@clacke I am not positive about if it's completely true in this case, since you specifically mentioned a Hong Kong account - At least for my experience, you can get another eShop account (for US or Europe) and then use your existing Nintendo Switch Online subscription to play the English game selection :)

@sotolf The Switch is in English, the two games I bought on game cards are in English, my Nintendo account in a browser is in English, but still the eShop on the Switch is in all Chinese and the emulators are in all Japanese.

@clacke Hmm, mine is in the austrian store and I think I just set a setting in my switch somewhere that still makes everything English.

@Whovian9369 Hmm yeah if I try to play e.g. the GBA with another account it says I need a subscription.

Is your main account a family subscription?

@Whovian9369 I can't download an emulator unless I'm in the eShop that has the paid subscription ... I think??? I'll have another look this direction of things as well.

@clacke You're using the "Nintendo Switch Online" emulator applications downloaded from another user (For example, with an American or European account), but using your already paid Switch Online account to actually play it.

So download the emulators with your foreign account, and play them using your home account.

@clacke I first played A Link to the Past in Japanese and let me tell you, it's a much better game if you can understand what's being said

For now I'll enjoy reading Bowser shouting GAHAHAHAHAHA in hiragana I can actually read in an otherwise overwhelming dialog, and play some Gameboy Tetris just because I have access to that now.

      @Whovian9369 IT WORKS

All the Nintendo Switch Online emulators can be downloaded for free without a subscription!

Just like you said, download it with the user that has the right version, play it with the user that has the paid subscription.

      THANK YOU!

Now playing Paper Mario with English dialogue!

@clacke Maybe you could try a free trial, if you can find it?

Also, maybe you are using the "normal" subscription while trying to play emulators that are only accessible from the more expensive subscription? (For example, the GBA emulator.)
