    @smallpatatas@mstdn.patatas.ca @kidehen@mastodon.social @Jdreben@mastodon.world The Fediverse, by its nature, is not Meta but that can’t and won’t prevent Meta from using its technology.

    But more importantly, if we don’t want to be Meta, what’s the practical means of doing that?

    If we don’t provide a means to help Meta users migrate away from Meta, we’re just letting Meta continue to be Meta.

      Suggestion that the practical means of not being Meta is not allowing the fediverse to be absorbed by them.

      And why do you think Barcelona would be designed in a way which allows its users to migrate away? Everything he's ever built previously did the opposite of that, and trapped everyone inside

      @ophiocephalic@kolektiva.social @Jdreben@mastodon.world @kidehen@mastodon.social @smallpatatas@mstdn.patatas.ca We don’t know much about Meta, and suggesting otherwise is presumptive.

      If #Barcelona doesn’t allow user migration, then it will just need to happen the old fashioned way: by suggesting users sign up to another service.

      If Barcelona doesn’t federate, well, then this conversation is all academic.

      @Jdreben @ophiocephalic @atomicpoet @smallpatatas Yes!

      It has just taken them a while to understand the inevitable, regarding the underlying design that makes the #Web possible 😀

      The leaked Barcelona promotion mentions "Mastodon compatibility", which has been interpreted as ActivityPub federation. If it doesn't mean that, then we can all breathe a big sigh of relief, but it certainly seems to.

      Of course, no one outside of the corporation knows anything about the account migration question, but IMO there's a snowball's chance in hell of that. It's a business model of enclosure and extraction, rather than a new "fediverse app".

      @ophiocephalic @atomicpoet @kidehen @smallpatatas If Meta federates with ActivityPub it would be a difficult chink in their armor to hammer out. However foggy and air tight they try and make the glass, being able to interact w/ the FOSS decentralized world would be a good for those trapped users, and us imo

      They *can’t* swallow up this universe. Much like space and unlike the earth, there is infinite room for everyone here and the ability for us to block, mute, and more to protect ourselves
