I've never had all of my ducks in a row. A few are always slightly off to the side, a couple are distant, on the horizon, but I can still see them, and there's always one that's just errant. The errant duck.

This Ft. Collins kid can corroborate! They are nuuumerous at every water feature, and have become a kind of emblem of the city. They even are (or at least used to be) on the police cars, which is weird because the goose has become kind of an Anarchist / ACAB symbol…. -

It is. I was surprised when I saw the reaction. There’s a sort of love-hate relationship with wildlife here in the west. The Wild/Urban Interface, or wooie as it’s pronounced, is riddled with cognitive dissonance. Oh, those prairie dogs are so cute! Oh, those prairie dogs are carriers of Plague. (True.) -

We’ve got tons of em here in Fort Collins. 50 years or so ago some local guy thought they were cute or something and imported a bunch. There are thousands now but fortunately a significant number of them go north for the summer. There’s a gang hanging out at a small pond near my house. Some are getting the bird flu that’s going around, and nobody’s sorry for them. -

Most the areas they migrated to(and stayed) don't have natural predators for them. So they are over populating -

I live in southeastern VA ....they immigrated here, and haven't left. They are worse than pigeons and seagulls put together. They have no natural predators, and you can't hunt in city limits so they are over populated and wrecking havocIn conversation permalink -

Carolyn (cstamp@mastodon.social)'s status on Sunday, 14-May-2023 06:32:27 JST Carolyn @MPgh @APBBlue @StillIRise1963 @Adam_Cadmon1 @statmonkey OMG. Shortly after I moved to Toronto, decades ago, the city was trying to figure out what to do with the Canada goose problem. They don't migrate (mostly, we have mild winters), and parks were a mess. Birth control, cull, what to do? A town in New Brunswick, "don't kill them! We'll take a bunch!" So, transport trucks full of geese were sent east. A few years later, from NB, "the geese are a problem, what shall we do?!" :)
