Fedizens, what is the #fediverse microblogging platform that has the best support for text search? ("Search" as in searching your own past posts). I am kind of dissatisfied with both platforms I use (Mastodon, Epicyon) because I sometimes want to go back and find older conversations, posts, DM/PMs and stuff.
Mastodon used to have a pretty good text search which is why I have my archive account there and subscribe from this to my main accounts. Regrettably, the Dear Leader curtailed searchability even of one's own posts due to stalking and spamming considerations. Fair enough from his angle but devastating for non-malevolent users. Thus specific tagging and keyword-groups may be of use in archiving.
This is one of the things I frequently do on Twitter. Go back to old posts (sometimes years old posts) and threads and revive them in a new context. I wouldn't know if a post or a thread will end up that interesting or relevant to me when I post them. And I wouldn't want to add hashtags and make them unnecessarily visible to the entire network all the time.
I understand it requires loads of resources if you want to implement full text search for the entire history of posts, including full threads with replies posted by others. Not really feasible for those who run smaller or single user instances.
There was a really great thread in the @helpers@friendi.ca forum the other day about this topic social.yl.ms/display/e18176ef-… If I want to find anything you wrote about search I can search +@lohang@mastodon.social +search and find everything that exists is on this server that you wrote about search. Based on this thread sounds like #friendica may be the most feature rich #Fediverse platform on this front too. 😀
@kiriappeee@lohang I don't think this is a culture of the 'verse as much as it is of mastodon/Eugene. Yes Mastodon is by far the largest platform but I'm not certain if that's because more users prefer such design decisions, or if they didn't realize there were other options to stay connected with Friends, particularly during the #TwitterMigration. If people don't want their posts serachable, they could set their privacy to "friends only" but I don't know if Mastodon has that option either.
@lohang unfortunately this is more of a cultural thing than a technological limitation. Full text search is not a fondly supported idea in the fediverse so it’s unlikely that any tools that introduce it in a must-opt-out fashion will likely be blocked or shut down.
@fu Yes, the old one. On one hand nostalgic joking but on the other hand the search function was in fact excellent in that way you could subscribe to the search queries.
Important update : It turns out that #Epicyon does support full text search of your own posts! I was just told that using an ' (apostrophe) right before the search string indicates a full text search.
A hidden gem or a not-so-well-documented feature in Epicyon. For example, if I want to find my posts that mention WordPress, I should enter 'WordPress in the search box. If I wish to find out my posts about "colours and composition", I should enter 'colours and composition.
