Musk really doesn't understand that other people exist. Textbook narcissist.
It's not only art accounts and automated cat pictures; this is going to to hurt people and cost lives.

@juandesant I think you're missing the point here.
It's 1) not available everywhere [e.g. NWS Tsunami people can't do emergency alerts in say Japan] and 2) many people turn it off for various reasons (e.g. they work jobs they can't be interrupted at or they keep a secret phone because they're in an abusive relationship).
@thomasfuchs this still begs the question: why don’t the use the same underlying mechanism of the AMBER alerts? That is what the disaster prevention and mitigation department (SERNAPRED, formerly ONEMI) does in Chile… and the mechanism is available internationally.
@juandesant yeah, fair.
@thomasfuchs sorry, I think we’re both in agreement. It is irresponsible not to allow already established public emergency services, both morally and financially, because it removes incentives to use the birdsite.
But it is also wild that existing infrastructure with public access is not use more. You can geofence alerts, and even if you silence them (it is different from the volume and mute switches), hearing everyone else’s phone beeping and vibrating with a particular sound is telling.
@thomasfuchs Counterpoint: Shame on every public service for relying on big business to transmit vital information.
Double shame on people like you and me for not make government responsible.
@PatrickoftheG The government needs to go where people are, and people are on commercial media. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
@thomasfuchs If only the government had the means to easily and effectively change that.
@PatrickoftheG How, force everyone to watch state TV? :)
@WillRobinson I don't think this post is hard to understand? Do you have a specific question about it?
@thomasfuchs what?
@timo21 @PatrickoftheG That doesn't matter for emergency alerts. To reach the most amount of people the government has to go where the most amount of people are.
@PatrickoftheG @thomasfuchs IIRC Congress has passed various laws that prevent the feds from creating any products that compete with private industry. So the feds have to use commercial platforms to communicate with the citizens, as they cannot create their own platforms. Web sites and apps appear to be fine though.
@thomasfuchs the purpose is to reduce the number of bots.
@JKLund I think you drank the Musk cool-aid
