this weekend mom went to a friend's church and came back and told me that the church had apple juice (???) for communion and for someone who hasn't been religious in a very long time and has no skin in the game I experienced some Very Strong Emotions

andy (andy@friendica.hubup.pro)'s status on Tuesday, 11-Apr-2023 00:08:17 JST andy @hypolite I've seen it before myself, sadly. I think Silverwizard was precisely hinting at this.
I find this rather alienating from my own upbringing, where drinks were a normal social affair to be enjoyed in moderation in communal or family settings.

andy (andy@friendica.hubup.pro)'s status on Tuesday, 11-Apr-2023 00:08:19 JST andy @hypolite I absolutely agree with the practical and sensible step of having grape juice! But I wouldn't be surprised that some people will take this to an absurd level and create dogmas where alcohol is seen as bad per se and even grapes themselves are already the first step away from their imaginary path of rigorousness. -

hypolite (hypolite@friendica.mrpetovan.com)'s status on Tuesday, 11-Apr-2023 00:08:20 JST hypolite @andy I can definitely see the issue with providing alcohol to potential alcoholics, but I was under the impression from earlier in the conversation that flat grape juice was also problematic. -

Unfortunately, this is the legacy of puritanism that has a resulted in an unhealthy preoccupation and condemnation of alcohol. -
