It seems like almost nobody uses these by default.

So with this in mind, contentiously, what *is* the default (graphical*) browser for Linux? Is it Firefox, or is it Chromium/something else?

(*graphical browser before someone says wget/curl/w3m/lynx/emacs/bind)

@mattl Ubuntu is the largest (by userbase) Linux desktop. It ships Firefox by default. Firefox on Ubuntu is/was a significantly sized userbase. Significant from Mozilla's perspective. So you could argue yes, Firefox is defacto the "default" (graphical) browser on desktop Linux.

@popey Thanks. I thought Ubuntu was moving to Chromium, but I guess not. It's been a while since I've installed desktop Ubuntu from scratch..

@popey Last time I bought a Dell Ubuntu machine I don't think it did (that was 2014/5) but I think my misunderstanding comes from watching random YouTube videos about single board computers which come with unofficial Ubuntu images that probably include Chromium.

@mattl I think "We can switch to Chromium" is a great tool when negotiating the amount of revenue Firefox gets out of the search engine money. It's a surprisingly low percentage, but still a large number. Interestingly if you *buy* an Ubuntu machine from Dell or Lenovo, you get Firefox *and* Chrome (not Chromium) which may be why you might think that.

@mattl yes, I use and love Web! I keep Firefox around for WebRTC and Widevine stuff, but otherwise use Web. It’s gotten continuously leaps and bounds better each release over the past several years.

@popey I have that on my Steam Deck, which is the closest I get to desktop Linux these days. Everything else is a Linux server... mostly Ubuntu, but some CentOS/RHEL and some Debian.

@mattl I’m far more interested in what rendering engine the distros use for the networked OS features. It’s not what you’re asking here but if we expanded the discussion a little I would be very curious.

@pmarrone What networked OS features are those? Do you mean when a desktop app shows a web view?

@mattl obviously GNU Ice Wheezle with the plugin that warns you if there's UNLICENSED JAVASCRIPT on a website, a good and normal default that all users want ?
