     @MikePalumbo it's like no other fantasy book you will ever read. You will HATE the main character and fall in LOVE with everything around him.

     That’s so funny - I had never heard of this series until earlier today, when I came across the first book, LORD FOUL’S BANE, on a list of recommended fantasy novels.

     Another book for my TBR pile…

     I've never seen it, I'll have to check it out.

     I never really cared for the Lord of the Rings movies all that much. I found Frodo too whiny. My daughter has me watching them with her and it's reminding me why I don't like them.

     Plus they kill Sean Bean, why do they always kill Sean Bean?

     I haven't seen the books either or rather never heard of them. I did read Lord of the Rings and found them tedious at best.

     I much preferred reading the Game of Thrones books, wish that jackass would finish the last two.

     I still stand behind my Frodo being a whiny bitch though.

     @darkfoxprime You can't separate the history and side stories from LOTR anymore then you can the depressing nature of the main character of COTC.

     @Mrfunkedude I will agree that it's _written better_ than Lord of the Rings, which I have never been able to read. On the other hand, however well it's written, I'll never agree that it's a better story (once you strip LotR down to the actual story, without all the history and side-stories that Tolkien added in); Thomas Covenant is the most depressing and unsatisfying series I have ever read.

     @digitalrodent He is the quintessential anti hero. You end up hating the main character and loving almost everyone that surrounds him. Even the land itself. That's such a subversive approach too fantasy writing. Donaldson pulled it off brilliantly.

     @Mrfunkedude I agree with this unpopular opinion! It’s absolutely different than so much of cookie-cutter medieval fantasy. The Ur-Viles are so deliciously evil, so much better than orcs. I think that the anti-hero main character (Thomas Covenant) would be hard for many modern readers to comprehend though.
