Three things I’m realizing about #Tootfinder:
1. Many people have opted in already, and I’m finding a lot of good content in there
2. #Tootfinder is still controversial because, of course, it’s search and certain people will always hate search
3. But #Tootfinder is *not* controversial enough to wind up on Fediblock, and this is the least controversial Fediverse search service yet
All told, this is progress!

@fediversenews since it's opt-in I think most people will be fine with it. it does mean that in terms of search quality it'll probably not be as good but maybe it'll work out better. I had an idea for a similar project in the past (basically a clone of wiby.me but for the fediverse) but I'm glad this is a thing now.

@astrojuanlu @atomicpoet @fediversenews same. It being absolutely opt-in and supporting the right to be forgotten makes it useful for those who want that functionality while not harming those who don’t.

Just another thing. I am a big #activist for #privacy. I only use #opensource and #privacy respecting #apps. I use a Swiss email and #vpn and random usernames on every single site I use.
But I know and understand that what I say here is public. Nothing can stop anyone from indexing this post. Whether it is by the #web #archive or an actual search engine.
If you don't want something you said to be public, use #signal and tell the person directly.

Following a single account is also much simpler. When you need to start editing bios and other stuff. The human error element comes in, and stuff goes wrong, leading to non-technical people getting frustrated and leaving the #fediverse.
Stop over, complicating the fediverse and #Mastodon.
