@thomasfuchs A lot of these (not to claim it's all of them) end up serving a more evolutionary role than revolutionary; for example even if pen computing didn't make the revolution it was anticipated to cause, you can still pretty clearly trace the lineage of ideas from then to what we have today

@thomasfuchs What I see are individual smart home applications, e.g. locks and light bulbs. What I'm not seeing is a whole-home integration. I don't know if that will ever happen in normal middle class homes.

@thomasfuchs @bk1e I don't use any voice assistance but I do use voice typing a fair amount when I'm alone. Very obnoxious of course in an open office or anywhere with people around, but then again since the pandemic gets become acceptable to join a Zoom meeting at your desk and talk into your monitor with everyone around expected to wear headphones to tune you out, so who knows?

@thomasfuchs @bk1e Overhyped maybe, but for accessibility to people who need it, maybe not.

@fidget @thomasfuchs in 1998, Pixar first used Ray Tracing in a film, but only a single glass object used for a few seconds. Eight years later, ray tracing was finally fast enough to use for an entire move. With one of the largest supercomputers in the world (24,000 processors) it took 17 hours to render each frame.

Today we can do it with a high end consumer GPU. I expect soon it won't even tax the GPU at all. Ray Tracing will be everywhere.

@thomasfuchs I have a feeling dedicated hardware accelerated ray tracing will eventually go this way. It’s super useful for previewing 3D models, but it’s uses in gaming have so-far been limited and niche.

I mean. It’s neat I can have ray-traced everything, but I think it’s a huge overhead and people will eventually wisen up that games don’t need ray tracing to look good.

The coolest thing done with RTX has been Portal RTX, and it’s basically an comparably low-effort way to upgrade visuals.
