@fidget @thomasfuchs in 1998, Pixar first used Ray Tracing in a film, but only a single glass object used for a few seconds. Eight years later, ray tracing was finally fast enough to use for an entire move. With one of the largest supercomputers in the world (24,000 processors) it took 17 hours to render each frame.
Today we can do it with a high end consumer GPU. I expect soon it won't even tax the GPU at all. Ray Tracing will be everywhere.
