     3/ If you're new and wondering if you're on the “right" or "wrong" server: don’t. Many of us started on one of the larger servers then moved to another (usually smaller) server 4-8 wks later

     Mastodon servers are analogous to Twitter Communities: even those with narrowly-defined topic areas still have access to a firehose of content (w/ some exceptions). One way to explore all the content Mastodon offers is by viewing the “Federated" timeline— and following folks that post interesting content

     2/ There are more inauthentic accounts around these parts than there used to be, but it's not remotely close to what you're accustomed to dealing with on #Birdchan, FB, or IG. Updating your profile photo sends the signal that you're a real person－ even if you're not using your real name. Posting a brief intro goes a long way, too.

     That said, these actions are *totally optional* — don't let anyone guilt you into disclosing more personal info than you're comfortable sharing with a global audience

     To the new Mastodon arrivals: welcome! Feel free to ignore the self-appointed tone police that are telling you how you should behave based on their 3 weeks or 3 years on here.

     As someone that's been on Mastodon longer than >80% of everyone else (i.e. late October), I can assure you that nobody－ and I mean nobody－ on the tone patrol is speaking on behalf of anyone except themselves.

     Just be courteous, check the contrarianism at the door, and you'll fit right in. Trust me.
