AD(H)D is the inability to self-regulate your impulses caused by a developmental delay of the prefrontal cortex. Your natural dopamine production is reduced. You are more impulsive. You prefer the immediately rewarding activities over the activities that reap long-term benefits.

Anything immediately enjoyable has the potential to be addictive for you. You have a much higher risk to become addicted. Not only to drugs, but also to “easy” dopamine-sources like video games or masturbation.

Your shame of not being able to perform despite being smart increases your risk of addiction as compensatory action.

Here’s a plan on how to tackle it:

    • Get an ADD/ADHD diagnosis, psychological help and maybe medication. Stimulating drugs increase your prefrontal cortex activity and help you with self-regulation.
    • Get sober! Cut out the addiction from your life - alcohol/drugs, excessive masturbation and video games. This leads to a long-term reduction of dopamine receptors in your brain. Fewer receptors means that less enjoyable activities will become more enjoyable over time. Like studying or chores.
    • Meditation strengthens frontal lobe activity and increases your ability to cut out distractions. This is the only pro-active thing you can do, while the others are mostly “don’ts”.
    • Strictly cut out distractions when studying/working (social media, phone notifications). These dompanine-high activties will drain your ability to study.
    • Stop shaming yourself for not being able to perform as well as other people - who might have a lower IQ. Accept that you have a medical condition and that our modern world with its many sources of cheap gratification is hurting you.

I was merely explaining what current scientific research says. this evolved greatly over the last few years and will still improve.

if this goes against your experience and you have different means to handle it, that's great. ADHD is like ASD a spectrum and not every person affected has the same struggles.

@kaia "Accept that you have a medical condition and that our modern world with its many sources of cheap gratification is hurting you"? What the fuck is that? No.

That "cheap gratification" /isn't/ hurting us, it's /providing us with the stimulation we need./ You'd rather us be sitting around all day constantly understimulated because there's nothing to do? No Fucking Thanks.

      @kaia honestly that sounds kinda

"cut out all the fun things in your life"? why the /fuck/ would we do that?

and it's not "addiction" to any one thing, for us. It's stimulation in general. When we're understimulated, we get metaphorically jittery and start looking for stuff to do – but that stuff can be a game, it can be music, etc.

Medication would help (since it would provide the stimulation we need), but the rest of it? Bah. Sounds overly pathologizing.

@kinoko do you know from first-hand experience? have you tried in a clinical setting or did you just go and buy one? I read about it and it sounds very promising.

@kaia Have you heard of tDCS for ADHD? It seems like in combination with Elvanse (lisdex AKA Vyvanse), tDCS has been very effective in reducing depression that’s comorbid with ADHD and increasing self-regulation, without upping the dose of Elvanse. It’s been a significant change

@kaia I am currently trying the Flow Neuroscience headset. I was told by a psychiatrist that it would be the same as going for tDCS in a clinic, but the monthly rent costs as much as one visit so I decided to try at home, especially as it’s approved as a medical device in Europe.

Yes, it’s my first-hand experience, I record all of my symptoms and medications and can see significant improvement each week since using tDCS. I’ve been on Elvanse since January (with some tolerance breaks).

@kaia I was thinking of doing a statistical analysis for fun but just looking at the data already reveals the trend. I might do a couple of tests for fun though (I love statistics lol).

@kaia in my case I'm weirdly not prone to addiction for some reason. Neither tobacco nor tiktok held my attention and I don't do the stuff I do like, such as weed, all that much.
