   I can't be alone in thinking "The Linux Experiment" YouTuber is a moron. No, no. I know I'm not alone cause the video was sent to me by another developer thinking the same thing.

   So end-users submitting bug reports to an upstream project (like GNOME) rather than a distribution's bug tracker without first verifying if the issue exists in the GNOME project's version of the software is NOT new nor correct. This is literally an "issue" as old as time itself.

   I find it humorous that upstream developers today don't understand how free software works. Linux Mint for example is shipping an old version of GNOME calendar more or less. I get there are some add-ons for display, but it's still essentially GNOME's calendar program, old, but GNOME calendar none-the-less.

   For instance:

   "drop the package entirely and let users get it from us"

   This completely overlooks the reason users download a distribution or this distribution in the first place. It's geared at those wanting stuff that is going to work and continue working. Not some app that is constantly being updated with new features and as a consequence breaking things every other day.

   Some users like Arch users do little more than play with GNU/Linux and want that too, but that's not Linux Mint. The vast majority of folks using your software want stuff that is stable and continues working not major changes breaking things every other day. Major changes SHOULD NOT OCCUR until major new releases. Only security updates.

   It's not Linux Mint (for the most part) that is doing it wrong. It's you not understanding free software.

   The part of the complaint that has a tiny bit of merit is naming, but it is still a bit ridicules given it is mostly GNOME calendar still, just old.

   Okay. So some updates.

   It turns out loops (BEGIN..UNTIL) are a "premium" Forth feature and are only available inside functions. So I need to wrap the whole program in a : function ; . Well not the whole program, not the VARIABLEs, and I don't think you can nest the functions, and… never mind. I do the nest. New code:

   gforth fails with :

   src/puzzle.f:38: Invalid memory address

   I wrapped my program in a : run [code here] ; run . Line 38 is "run".

   I'm still lost.

   @LavenderPawprints also, to touch on the "running your own instance" thing...honestly, I don't think it would be good for you.

   EVERYTHING is "opt-out". Meaning, since there's dozens of new instances every day, there's also a handful of bad ones every week. So you'd have to literally live on Fediblock and Fediseer and make sure to stay on top of Oliphant's updates.

   It would be quite stressful, I think.

   I don't even do all of those things because they're too much to keep up with. However, I am not a visually impaired transgirl with major depression, anxiety, and past addiction issues, if you know what I mean. Because of who you are, it would be harder because you're someone that people look to attack, and that's really unfortunate.😔

   Consider also the lost concept of milestone releases and real versioning.

   One of the aspects of the hell of FOSS is the constant micro updates in lieu of discrete updates.

   It's like these alleged programmers just figure the nightly channel is stable so they push it to main every day.

   I have a couple of Linux systems that are on spinning disks... and I cannot convey how incredibly slow they are at "basic" tasks like system updates.

   It's "just leave it running" levels of slow, in a world where I've got used to not leaving things like that because the context switching isn't worth it.

   [there is zero reason for these systems to have "good" root storage, they're off-site backup nodes, and have decent big storage instead]
