@mekkaokereke Something utterly appalling about America that I learnt in the past week.
Yes, it's a tangent, but it has everything to do with your core point.
Many of the firefighters that have been battling the bushfires in Los Angeles these past few days are prison inmates: https://www.bbc.com/news/articles/c3rwdjwglx2o
"Nearly 1,000 incarcerated men and women have joined the frontlines in a battle against record-breaking wildfires burning across southern California.
"The number deployed - now 939 - are part of a long-running volunteer programme led by the California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation (CDCR).
"The state pays inmates a daily wage between $5.80 and $10.24 (£4.75 and £8.38), and an additional $1 per day when assigned to active emergencies."
In the richest country on Earth, making inmates put their lives at risk fighting bushfires for US$5.80 an hour + US$1 a day?!
Genuine question: How do you allow that to happen?!
And in the supposedly liberal state of California!
As a foreigner, with all the crazy stuff that's happened in America recently, that managed to shock me.
In good conscience, how do you allow your nation's prison–industrial complex to get that bad?
And that's just one manifestation of it!
Any Democrat who calls themselves a "liberal" and enables it should hang their head in shame.
Mastodon spaceflight mass-mind, please come to my aid. My google-fu is failing me.
In the Apollo program, Saturn V’s S-II (second stage) employed four ullage motors situated on the aft interstage skirt. Additionally, the third S-IVB stage incorporated an Auxiliary Propulsion System designed for ullage purposes. These settled the fuel so the engines did not injest vapor and shred.
Question: why didn't the ullage motors need ullage motors?
Reroute To Remain (2002) was the beginning of In Flames' move from melodic death metal to metalcore, but although I didn't take to their later sound, this is a favourite of mine.
It has themes of alienation, rejection by and disinterest in society, and a resultant sense of isolation. It spoke volumes to me.

A Ray of Light in a Tough Week
Starting a new job is always nerve-wracking, but as a trans woman, it comes with even more complexities. During my recruitment process, I avoided any direct discussion about my gender—not out of fear, but because I wanted my skills and experience to speak first. From day one, I’ve been presenting as myself, fully female, but without any direct conversations about my pronouns or identity.
Yesterday, during a meeting, my manager started referring to me with they/them pronouns. It was a small but incredibly affirming moment. Afterward, he asked to speak with me privately and kindly inquired about my preferred pronouns. I let him know that I prefer she/her but that they/them also works. I thanked him for making the effort not to misgender me.
In today’s meeting, he used she/her pronouns without missing a beat. It’s hard to put into words how meaningful that was—being seen and respected in this way.
This week hasn’t been easy. Between the challenges of starting a new job, losing power at home after a storm, spoiled food, and crowded grocery stores, I’ve been feeling pretty drained. But this recognition of my gender has been a ray of light in an otherwise dark week.
Here’s to progress, kindness, and the little moments that remind us we’re moving in the right direction. 💖
