riffing further: my take on communicating science is to always aim for levelling people up.
"its too complex for [cohort]"
...do we know for sure?
As an example, avoid value statements like "powerful model". Say what the model is, what it does, explain its assumptions.
et cetera.
As well as the piece that inspired this mini rant, I read some excellent science communication today about orbits and crash clocks - leaving feeling levelled up rather than talked down at.
So it can be done!!
The phrase "How dare you" has always seemed off to me. It should be "How do you dare?" but for some reason, someone decided to fuck with the syntax and fuck with everyone's brains.
Yet it continues to exist.
"How" is a question of the manner in which something is done.
"Dare" is a challenge.
"You" is the person it's directed at.
So essentially you're saying "In what manner challenge you?" Which is even a worse sentence.
Why am I telling you this? No clue. Welcome to my ADHD brain.
My question is voted up pretty high, over 80, together with other DEI questions and only exceeded by a lay-off question. (The other guy only got 15 votes.)
So I probably don't have to stand up and ask my question in person at the meeting tomorrow, which I'm not sure I would succeed at.
So I will just come (which I normally don't do, I just attend remotely) and bring my newly-acquired trans flag. I'm cis, but my trans colleagues are the most vulnerable group right now.
And if he wins, it will be VERY funny for about four years as we get to repeat the 2016-2020 period when he barely went a week without giving people like us something else to mock and laugh at.
So WHATEVER happens, it's a win for people who make jokes about the news! 😀
My sister just found some hidden surveillance devices pointed at the beds at the vacation rental she's staying at.
So stay safe and always check for creeps my friends.
Some days, it pains me that we've built such a useful service, and so few people get to even give it a chance 😔
I've done everything I possibly could (incuding, more than halving the monthly subscription price), but product marketing is something I personally suck at.
So, I am begging you, the community, to help us out. If you know anyone who would benefit from our social media news and stories aggregator, share this post with them.
Thanks! 🙏
