@skinnylatte nice! Are there any local scanning resources or coops? Scanning seems to be the most expensive part of film development. I think SFPL has a lab, but with limited hours that are inconvenient

I love software from the good old days so much. Of course the ebook manager has a webserver logic for a niche use case. Why would it not.

I love Calibre. It is from a simpler time in software.
There’s no sign in, no pop up, no subscription. Ugly icons and features everywhere.
Plugins are a zip file that you import.
Cracked the drm with a click and converted them to kindle format with another.

Gutted to hear about Zakir Hussain’s passing. He was the last of the legends of Indian classical music, and I count myself lucky to have watched him perform in-person a few times. His work and patronizing of jazz (including SFJazz) got me into jazz.
My ticket for masters of percussion for March ‘25 will be a somber reminder now.
I hope wherever he is, he gets a jig o’ beer & chai: https://youtu.be/kMdjmidkyk0

I saw a post today wondering why academics have such a knee-jerk reaction of suspicion and revulsion towards AI
Saw a lot of AI people chiming in reasoning everything from jealousy to curmudgeony
May I present my reasons:In conversation from discuss.systems permalink Attachments

Wait, Amazon login requires an OTP even with a passkey? I thought the whole point of a passkey was to avoid password and 2fa annoyances

@alcinnz kind of, I guess. I can’t discuss the details much but there are presentations back from when my org was a startup :D : https://www.hc32.hotchips.org/assets/program/conference/day2/HotChips2020_Networking_Fungible_v04.pdf

@alcinnz basically a low power pipelined run-to-completion architecture that takes storage and network off CPUs. It can then be optimized for power and bandwidth.

I recommend against going to UCSC (or any other UC) for grad school until they fix their ways.
The incompetent admin is demanding repayment from students (funds which came from grants, not the UC) for “overpayment” because of strikes.
Let me just remind you about the rents in Santa Cruz (https://www.ucop.edu/enrollment-services/data-and-reporting/student-budget-tables/typical-housing-costs-near-uc-campuses_2022.pdf) where most grads pay 40–50% of their stipend on rents to live in a shared house.
I’ve never seen a system run by a bigger bunch of clowns.
