@rysiek I am supposed to be able to just send an SMS to reenable it, but for some reason my SIM isn't connecting to a network at all now.
Which isn't great, I do want people to be able to call me if something is urgent.
Maybe oz uses different frequency bands and my phone just doesn't have the right antenna or something, or the right config. I'll figure it out. Probably!
You know that adage of people getting promoted to their level of incompetency?
It seems the entrepreneur/biz version of that is being convinced that once you've successfully built a business or three, you should get promoted to government...
@rysiek I still use that for some of the data (an external backup drive), but the machine needs to boot far enough to be on the network and accessible for that to work...
This machine wasn't originally set up with this in mind, so it doesn't have separate root/home partitions.
Proudly ashamed that I just kneecapped the full-disk #LUKS encryption on one of my personal #Linux servers.
I decided that the device was in a secure-enough location, and being able to auto-start on boot (e.g. after a power outage) was more important than protecting the drive contents.
It's maddening how much advice given to parents throughout the years has not just been a bit lame, it's been actively harmful.
Example: Food allergies.
For years, parents have been warned not to feed babies peanuts and such things until they were 3 years old. And only milk/formula until 6 months old.
When they finally get around to doing randomized trials, it turns out the best way to PREVENT food allergies is to feed babies exciting things at 4 months.
The how is well understood - onioning. The tech is open source enough for the community to verify the default implementation. Assuming they trojan their binaries... well, I think they would get caught.
The more interesting takeaway, is Google don't feel the IP address info is all that valuable anymore. They are comfortable giving it up, they trust it will hurt their competitors more than it hurts them.
@quinn You make excellent points. But even if Gazans were enfranchised, the "responsibility" argument is untenable.
Are the people making it OK with Hamas holding Israeli civilians responsible for the government that oppresses, starves and bombs Palestine? I rather doubt it.
As far as I can tell, in both cases "hold responsible" is a euphemism for murdering civilians.
That knife cuts both ways and should be left in the drawer.
I went to a London Film Festival premier last night; saw a film called Tuesday.
Apparently one of the reasons films do a round of festivals before they get released to the general public, is to build buzz. Well, this film deserves buzz, so doing my part! Buzz, buzz!
Tuesday was great! It had some Neal Gaiman vibes, but was still very clearly its own thing. I really enjoyed it.
