it's very hard to sell people on mastodon by telling them about the problems of the software they're already using, because they have already accepted those
i think sometimes people with more tech literacy don't actually do better with high friction software because they are "better at computers" but because they have a higher tolerance for computers' bullshit and tech literacy comes from that
a thing i see ALL THE TIME on bluesky is "i like this site but we need mutes that expire after a day like mastodon has", people love that feature, they love being able to set privacy level per post, stuff like that
i don't get mansplained to nearly as much on bluesky, and that's not because bluesky stumbled on some kind of magical feminist UI design, it's because mastodon is dominated by FOSS nerds, who have a terrible culture
the mansplaining problem is a cultural one with mastodon because it's full of cis men who have put more thought into their linux flavor of choice than they ever have about whether their behavior is useful or wanted. it cannot be solved with the twitter popup that says "are you sure you want to post this?" when you tell someone to eat shit
okay so here's the deal: if i can get 15 people who are interested in buying a pair of earrings with the trans symbol (⚧), I'll order the parts for it. the symbol will be etched into a sterling silver disc, which will dangle from a sterling silver earring.
the ⚧ earrings will be $30 + $5 shipping US, $20 international. tell me if you're interested.
Hi mastodon! I finally fully deleted my Twitter, so I'm going to have to lean on other websites, including this one, to promote my jewelry shop. Shares really, really help me.
like if you are a nerd on a website for nerds and you look at bluesky and are like "ah yes, normal people" you need a reality check about what normal people are like. go get a hair cut. talk to someone on the bus
and maybe the fact that there's barely contained hostility against people who chose to use other websites, such as the "if you use Threads you basically deserve to have your privacy violated" attitude i have seen, is why mastodon has a reputation for being a bunch of scolding linux guys
this is not a safe space for whining about journalists who accurately assessed that your website has a long way to go if it's going to appeal to very many people who aren't linux freaks
"why do journalists keep telling people our website is hard to use" because there's a million weird little idiosyncratic things like "replies aren't all visible" and "you have to copy paste stuff to follow people on another instance" and the site culture is to gaslight anyone who points this out
like i am sorry but i saw a survey going around on here where like 80% of the respondents used linux. no one on this website has any idea how normal users of technology work
i dunno maybe the fact that this website responds with hostility and 'splaining to everyone who points out that it has problems with features like "finding your friends" "talking to your friends across instances that have inexplicable beef with each other" "following accounts from links on websites" is part of why all bluesky managed to win over so much of shitposting twitter
