@lain Internet comic people should just put their names on the comic itself, it makes it easier for all of us
Also, I would really appreciate genAI preparing the alt text, because I always forget to write that. -

The fact that Trump's tariffs backfire so greatly is basically globalization winning without doing anything, just seeing its opponents shooting themselves in their feet. -

@wolf480pl Still, the only way to go back to the prosperity the globalization provides is to reject these tariffs. Keeping the tariffs means keeping the problems and keeping the economic destruction.
Which basically shows that it is the globalization that overall greatly increases wealth in the society.
If USA wants to destroy its prosperity because of some hillybilly ideas (hurr durr ~~Balcerowicz~~ globalization destroyed our enameled pots factory), the rest of the world can just keep doing what they have been doing and reap benefits. -

@wolf480pl Of course, you can argue that if we all moved to juche the globalization would be dead regardless, but the fact that it will greatly hurt the level of prosperity in the society as a whole proves that the globalization is a positive and beneficial phenomenon. -

@wolf480pl >there may be benefits to reduction of globalization that are not captured by economic metrics
Only to some minor groups of people, like manufacturing workers and to be honest. And automation is a problem for them too, even if it's an obvious benefit to the society as a whole.
People who oppose globalization should be really considered luddites,
>For example, reduced risk of disruption by a big boat stuck, or by geopolitical events.
Big boat stuck is basically a problem with how people construct the supply chains, not with the globalization as a whole (and if your supplier is flooded for example, your non-globalized production might still have a problem, so you need to well-design your supply chains anyway). And maybe a problem with infrastructure (biggie boutie stuck), but it's cheaper to build a new canal anyway… or even just keep the old one, because we had *one* event like this in the last, what, 50 years?
And the benefits of globalized trade and supply chains are enormous, billions of people pulled out of poverty, the huge increase in the availability of good for consumers. There is no net-benefit in restricting globalization, even if we have a boat stuck in the canal every few decades.
Geopolitical events are basically states fucking things over, globalization at least makes it costly for everyone and decreases the probability of having geopolitical problems. Guess what decoupling China from the global economy might do for the chances of war in Taiwan. -

To be honest, people claiming that the whole situation with Trump will sure lead to the vast replacement of US tech and services in Europe are amazingly hillarious -
