@kainoa@calckey.social Can't seem to get npm to start node from the systemd daemon created. Starting it manually from the calckey directory with pnmp boots it up but full of errors, leading me to believe other things are also misconfigured. :misato_oops:

@kainoa@calckey.social node installed normally with nvm put it + npm within environments in the user home directory (also where Calckey gets installed) but keeps throwing errors about unable to locate node in /use/bin/env and trying to run npm from /use/bin/npm even though that's not where it is and not the path that was given to it from whereis node or whereis npm. I don't know, I'm just over my head. I tried dissecting the ubuntu.sh script as well illuminate and interpolate unknowns. Honestly I got pretty far considering my novice experience in hobby systems administration.

I've given up trying to install Calckey :calckey: manually. I've spent about 3 days on this, and I'm done. :misato_bored_pocky:

I can run it great as a Docker container :docker:, I can run it great on "bare metal" using the ubuntu.sh installer script :ubuntu:, but I cannot for the life of me successfully install and run it manually. :misato_blush:

Both the Docker deployment and the "bare metal" deployment via the installer script are fully functioning and stable. I'm just going to make peace with it and assume that all will be fine in the long term. :misato_sip:

If someone more competent than I and who knows what they're doing wants to hold my hand and walk me through this one day, then I'd be more than thrilled to volunteer the labor in using the experience to write a detailed installation guide for would-be maintainers.

@kainoa@calckey.social Don't mean to bother you any further, Kainoa, just wanted your opinion on something like "best (or recommended) practices". I've got a Dockerized instance that runs perfectly fine on one machine, and a bare metal instance installed from the Ubuntu installation script provided on the Codeburg page, also running perfectly fine.

I wanted to pivot to bare metal to have better support as I understand the Docker image isn't as well supported. I also wanted things operating in a less abstract environment and more accessible.

Longevity and stability wise, do you think a bare metal installation utilizing the Ubuntu install script (on Codeburg it says "I recommend you use it!") is best? Or, do you think it would be better if I install everything manually without using the install script? I'm mostly concerned with the ability to deliver routine package and dependency updates and keep the instance healthy and up-to-date from an operational standpoint.

@lain@lain.com That would be pretty cool, actually. I've no idea the level of work that would have to go into something like that, though. Houseplants are great in general, all the same. Help freshen the air and are also good for mental health.

@Moon@shitposter.club I do feel bad and I don't feel bad for the "sex worker" instances. Sure, it's not good to be deplatformed, however many of the instances in question (e.g. switter.at) make it very easy to get shuttered. Why? Centralization. Why? Maybe a tragedy of their (sex worker) collective "business model". I guess it's "good for business" or "brand" or something to have everything in one place so that "customers" don't have to go hunting for "content". At any rate, large, centralized networks are not hardened against censorship and targeting. This was the same conundrum faced by, like them or hate them, groups like the KiwiFarms---you put everything into a single metaphorical basket and it's real easy to target. Individual "sex workers" with their own instances or instances for them and a few comrades would be a whole lot more difficult to target as a collective. Any group at risk of censorship, deplatforming, or other attack needs to get wise to evading fire. Simply using "FOSS, decentralized" technology isn't enough if one is only deploying a couple giant instances---try a couple hundred instances. Hell, even a couple dozen would probably suffice.
