@icedquinn @moffintosh there is literally no better choice though. The way they work should be fixed/improved, especially the shitty state it’s in in the USA, but throwing out the entire form of managing resources has the problem that what’re you gonna replace it with?
The answers are always combinations of:

• same shit but we try to do it better this time
• let’s leave the management of everything in the economy to politicians, what could go wrong?
• neither, we’ll sort it out without the need for authorities and it’ll work out (it won’t)

the usurist inputs their risk judgement and the risk they'll lose their money. Because of the fact they're personally affected by the results and this ability belongs to people who were smart enough to earn it at best and not stupid enough to lose it all at worst, this results in miles better resource management than any half-baked gov official using their two brain cells to try to decide what people should be doing. They're a necessary evil.

The combination of risk and management effort warranties big pay for anyone to be willing to do it, and most of the people whining about not having the ability to do it wouldn't want to do it anyway. They just want to slave away for stable comfortable life, in a world where the people they're envious of slave away alongside them.

@mw1cgg honestly baffling that’s legal in the USA at all. Try that in an EU country and whatever local branch of the government enforces workers’ rights will happily explain to you how much you need to fuck off. Not to mention that if you get away with it and try to enforce it, you’ll be laughed out of court, likely also starting a separate case of breaking employment laws.

Employers borrow a portion of your time, not take ownership of your life. Stuff like this should never happen in a country that claims to be civilised.

@icedquinn @SuperDicq I don’t really see a use for the QR code that isn’t fulfilled by just copying the stuff to clipboard or taking a screenshot, but I guess it would be cool.

Also TIL that the KDE clipboard utility has a “generate QR code” option. Looks like there’s no option to copy that to clipboard though lol, and even if there was it’s ofc not as straightforward as having it be generated by the info tool directly.

I don’t think they’re even close to Russia’s level of delusion to believe otherwise. Though this only applies to aggression, it seems that no current major power can win a conventional aggressive war against any other, they all can defend themselves.

Linux users: ok so if you want to copy a directory preserving metadata, you should use this sophisticated remote sync program with its own protocol for communicating on sending and receiving side, compression in transit and a thousand other options

I know it’s just practical to maintain this one tool that covers all of this related functionality, but every time I use rsync for non-remote stuff I feel like I’m taking an excavator to pull out a nail.

Same with wget, and probably there’s a lot more programs that have much larger capabilities than the simple tasks I use them for and I don’t even know it.

@icedquinn again, we’ve stopped idiotic ideas of the EU top brass multiple times in the past. It’s sad when they get this far, but we have a pretty good record of passing good policies and rejecting bad ones. Especially compared to other world powers lol

@Moon when I was in high school, it was a complex made of 2 different schools, a humanities high school and IT/CS technical school. The former was like 90% girls, the latter had literally one girl.
Funny part? Somehow all of them were hella ugly except for one. The technical girl.

@icedquinn thanks for reminding me how much I love NixOS’s store functionality allowing packages to have independent dependencies. Program A requires earlier version of LLVM but program B a later one? Sure, here you go, two LLVMs and everyone sees the one they like.

Pretty sure that effort-wise I got full return on investment in the first few days after installing. Literally never had dependency issues for the past ~2 years of using it.
