Reminder that alt text is for descriptions of the image, not commentary. That's what the toot itself is for. Giving your own thoughts on the image is fine, but don't forget the real purpose.
@evan I have noticed the reply guy problem increasing a bit, but it hasn't been that extreme for me. On the other hand, I've noticed my overall engagement growing less. I spend a lot more time on here lonely than I used to.
Occasionally I still go on Twitter. Well, I did recently for the first time in forever because I wanted to share my Go Fund Me, but I probably won't again for a long time. Anyway when I do I check my follower count, and when it goes down it actually makes me happy. Yes, maybe they just unfollowed me because I'm inactive, or they find my posts about Mastodon or asking for money annoying, but I like to think it's because they've deactivated their accounts and maybe moved here.
Having a cat in the middle of the bed is like when the housekeepers at the hotels make the bed and tuck the covers under the mattress, but in a different spot.
I'm once again seeing an uptick in pictures without alt text. Please try and be more mindful about that. It is really helpful for those of us using text to speech programs, and also others. Thank you. #AltText
Our Go Fund Me is going strong, but we still could use some help! Please keep sharing and consider donating if you can, and thank you so much to those who have already done so! #MutualAid
Last night I dremt one of Lilo's cat toys turned out to be a changeling, and we became friends, while at the same time Sisko and crew were flying off to confront the Dominian directly, but part of that may have just been an episode the others in my house were watching in the dream. #Dream#Dreams#StarTrek#StarTrekDS9
Hey all, I'm officially back! Spent 5 days in the hospital, and afterwards I didn't have the heart to open my laptop for several reasons, most of which had to do with the tons of notifications I would have waiting for me, lol. Thanks so much everyone for all the well wishes! As some of you know thanks to the efforts of my dear cousin @fartachoke I am now the proud new owner of not one, but 2 new kidneys! We're staying in a hotel. Moving to a less expensive, but somehow nicer, 1 tomorrow.
Something I've been seeing lately is people making a post, adding an image with alt text, (thanks for that, by the way!), but then the alt text is an exact copy of the post. You don't need to do this. If sharing a screenshot of text, then you either don't need to add anything else to it, or you should say something else in your post: explain where it came from, the significance, Etc. If sharing a picture, then the alt text should actually be a description of the picture. Hope this helps.
My main selling point to try and bring my blind friends to Mastodon from Twitter is people using alt text. I know I never claimed everyone did it all the time, but still, please don't make me look like a liar! #AltText
I'll be honest. I don't think I fully understand the fediverse. I thought I did when we were just talking in terms of Mastodon, but when other sites started getting in on the game, I realized maybe I didn't. As I'm typing this though, I'm realizing the benefits. I do that a lot, answering my own questions as I'm asking them, lol.
Call me Kate or Katie. , Recent kidney transplant recipient! Almost totally blind, I'm here for Muppets, Star Trek, cartoons, fanfiction and friends. I also am finding I spend a lot of time talking about the need for alt text. Please use it.
