linear cannon (linear@nya.social)'s status on Thursday, 08-Aug-2024 17:16:46 JST linear cannon i have now successfully recovered one of at least two childhood runescape accounts and am trying to get access to the other
unfortunately, losing access to my childhood domain names for a while meant that a number of accounts from back then got pretty thoroughly stolen, but i have control over those domain names again and have slowly been recovering old stuff -

linear cannon (linear@nya.social)'s status on Wednesday, 24-Jul-2024 07:46:17 JST linear cannon @Skirmisher@snoot.tube i'm pretty sure i even found the "real" internal job description to match the public one posted by a recruiting agency, and it is alike in only the most superficial of ways

linear cannon (linear@nya.social)'s status on Wednesday, 24-Jul-2024 07:41:37 JST linear cannon one of the places i just applied for has note in their job description that they are looking for experience with a certain build tool, which they name as though it should be common. but in reality it is an internal build tool of which i can only find two public records that it exists at all, one of which is the job listing (the other a pastebin of a build log from 6 years ago). i plan to point this out in the interview i have with them this week
i'm wondering if this is going to be another "well, actually, you said this is a C coding interview, but this is clearly C++11. let me translate these problems to C99 for you before i solve them" moment like with my last job -

i'm pretty sure that if they want to find someone with prior experience with the tool they are going to have to re-hire one of their recent layoffs :P -

linear cannon (linear@nya.social)'s status on Tuesday, 23-Jul-2024 23:30:53 JST linear cannon @makdaam@chaos.social i make embedded software, including for medical devices, and i have invoked the name of the Therac-25 during meetings as an example of why taking on a certain project and allowing it to proceed would be a very bad idea

linear cannon (linear@nya.social)'s status on Tuesday, 23-Jul-2024 23:30:52 JST linear cannon @makdaam@chaos.social if a client is making a would-be-Therac-25, i see it as a duty and obligation to tell them that they are doing that, and impede them from proceeding without fixing the issues with their project. which nearly every time boils down to getting them to realize that medical devices should be taken seriously, and not approached with a "move fast and break things" tech-startup attitude. which is sometimes futile, but then at least we said "no, we will not make this for you".

linear cannon (linear@nya.social)'s status on Monday, 22-Jul-2024 05:44:50 JST linear cannon it's really funny every time i get into a new topic and go read recent research papers about it, because between half and two thirds are things i don't understand, but then there's always a not insignificant number of them that are something like "hey guys, look, i grew algae in off-the-shelf plant fertilizer instead of F/2 solution and it worked fine" because even though it has surely been done, perhaps even regularly in classrooms, nobody ever bothered to publish a paper saying so until 2022

linear cannon (linear@nya.social)'s status on Friday, 19-Jul-2024 05:25:28 JST linear cannon @dysfun@social.treehouse.systems the wii did not run freebsd or anything even remotely resembling it. nintendo rolls their own custom operating systems, they just sometimes take networking code from freebsd, like everyone else (including microsoft) does

linear cannon (linear@nya.social)'s status on Friday, 19-Jul-2024 05:25:26 JST linear cannon @dysfun@social.treehouse.systems a similar misconception is that the nintendo switch runs FreeBSD and/or Android, since it includes license notices for both
however, it does not. it runs Horizon, an OS developed internally at Nintendo, which was first used on the 3DS. Horizon is a cooperatively-multitasked microkernel operating system, and the microkernel servers providing network functionality use some code from FreeBSD's network stack. the microkernel servers providing the compositor and related graphics functions are partly derived from Android in that a heavily modified version of SurfaceFlinger is used, alongside a microkernel server that emulates part of a Unix-like /dev VFS for running the Nvidia proprietary drivers -
