sucralose is the worst. it tastes overpoweringly sweet, to me, even in small amounts. maybe, it tastes concentrated? not sure. but it also seems like it's not supposed to be sweet, like the sweetness somehow stands out from the rest of the flavors. it's like when a teenager tries to hide the smell of weed in their room with a lemon-scented air freshener.
aspartame mostly tastes fine, but the taste lingers and has a bitter quality to it. i can drink things with aspartame, i just don't like it much
stevia is weird because it *doesn't* taste sweet at first, it takes a second to taste it, and it leaves a weird slick feeling in my mouth

my vax is now recompiling its kernel
i believe this will be the third time i've had this machine build its own kernel. and the first time it did not have sufficient RAM for the task -

the machine has 20MiB now (4 onboard + 16 via add-on board), but previously it had only 12 (4 + 8). and the stock NetBSD kernel takes a good 5MiB of that (5268kb, if you want to get more exact).
which is part of why i wanted a custom kernel, to disable options i don't need and reduce the size of the kernel in memory. for example, i use this machine headless, so there's no point in enabling the support for its graphics device -

@lanodan@queer.hacktivis.me they'd have hardware engineers who already made a bunch of test boards and were having us quote it, and send us hardware, and i'd find out that they just picked whatever connector someone on the internet (or their SoC vendor) said was "MIPI DSI", and they'd also send us the screen they'd already placed a bulk quantity order on
and i'd have to let them down gently on the fact that they were going to have to produce a new hardware rev before i could even start trying to make things work -

@lanodan@queer.hacktivis.me yep. there is no connector standard. the connectors should be considered bespoke for each individual panel/device family
i had to explain this to project managers and clients more times than i would've liked -

@lanodan@queer.hacktivis.me in my embedded software engineering career i only ever saw a single eDP display and it was in the laptop they gave me to do the job. every single device i worked on used MIPI DSI. all of them.

@lanodan@queer.hacktivis.me yeah the single pcie 2.0 lane is really limiting. this is why i am interested in a board based on the SpacemiT K1, like the framework-compatible board from DeepComputing or the one BananaPi has

@lanodan@queer.hacktivis.me
the patches don't work in 6.12 because they depend on functionality not yet introduced, but that is present in 6.13
and they don't work in 6.13 because they rely on an api that was present in 6.12 but removed in 6.13 :P
i managed to modify them to get them building but then they proceed to not actually work
i'm half tempted to keep poking at this now that i found my jtag adapter and can debug if things break, and send an updated patchset on behalf of the original author. and in the meantime i'm content to just use this over ssh / serial -

@lanodan@queer.hacktivis.me i'd like it if the hdmi driver was properly upstreamed
that seems to have fallen by the wayside, and after several revisions the patch now seems to have been abandoned for a few months and does not cleanly build
everything else i care about seems to work fine, though -

ok so somehow support for the t-head th1520 is even worse in 2025 than it was in 2024. neat
somehow i'm starting to doubt i will ever be able to make good use of these things -

@ifixcoinops@retro.social i do this kind of thing all the time with PDFs. i download old manuals or such from the internet all the time and get frustrated by how incredibly slowly they load/render. and then i look and see that they're 150MiB in size for some reason, and will not open in older computers (often the ones they are manuals for)
i usually just run them through pdf2ps then back through ps2pdf12 to turn them into v1.2 PDF files, and they become much smaller and will open on my quadra 700 or my 486 -

@lanodan@queer.hacktivis.me @mirabilos@toot.mirbsd.org it's a SpaceMiT K1, which is much more powerful on the CPU side - 8 cores (2 clusters of 4) with support for the vector 1.0 extension. from what i've seen it is about 10% faster for singlethreaded performance on code that is built for rv64gc, but significantly faster than that with vector extension support
the gpu is the same as the VisionFive2 though -

@mirabilos@toot.mirbsd.org if i were not living in a house way more expensive than i can afford and supporting two others i would probably have been strongly considering the deepcomputing risc-v variant of the framework 13
alas, definitely not something i can splurge on right now, the xeon phi replacement server i got last month was already pushing things
