@jonny I would say that ActivityStreams's Move action is within the spirit of Cool URIs Don't Change.

However, I've just re-read the original article (https://www.w3.org/Provider/Style/URI), and… hm. This is not nuanced enough. The rest of Tim BL's 1998 style guide is outdated, wrong, or overly-simplistic, but my sentimental attachment to this particular article was preventing me from seeing its flaws.

Do you know of a better canonical reference for how URIs should work?

@jonny I don't know providers, but unsubscribe is the RFC 2369 List-Unsubscribe header. If you can get anything capable of high email volumes, where you can set headers, you should be able to do this semi-manually to bide time until you can get a good system in place.

So, having someone vaguely-technical (really, they just need impeccable BCC hygiene and the ability to set headers when forwarding emails) be the designated Mailing List Operator might suffice.

@alilly One potential problem with this naming scheme, versus the popular non-standard approaches, is that it loses versioning information. But we shouldn't be using filenames for that: that's why we have version control. So make sure you have a .git folder in your boot directory, and commit every time you replace the kernel.

Explanation:

• Unlike FAT32, the inferior ext4 doesn't have a +S attribute. Marking the file "hidden" is the closest alternative.
• I read https://www.nongnu.org/lzip/xz_inadequate.html. (Well, I read the title.) I'm not sure what "inadequate" means, but I'm guessing it's like inflammable. So make sure to rename everything to xz for archiving.
• If you shut down your computer, the kernel image is needed to bring it back up. A trailing ~ signifies a backup file.

@paul Frame challenge: you say you are learning web development, but React is, like, the antithesis of web development. (It has some good ideas, so it can be worth learning about the framework, but actually using it is another matter entirely.) I doubt you'll learn best practices from this codebase.

As for an entry point… I don't know about "good", but __SECRET_INTERNALS_DO_NOT_USE_OR_YOU_WILL_BE_FIRED is a funny entry-point.

@mathew @alcinnz I'm disappointed we can't still do this. If you've got a graphically-intensive rendering process, it used to be that you could use other windows to cover it up, and make it run faster. Nowadays, it's not clear how to write a program that behaves this way.

You're holding is wrong.

@jamescooke It's not safe: that's an undocumented CPython implementation detail, and could change at any time. (Compare Java, where the equivalent behaviour is part of the language specification.) CPython is not the only implementation of Python.

You should not be writing code that relies on this behaviour in the first place. The decimal.Decimal limitation is a valid thing to be annoyed about (though it is documented), but is not working is not.

`is`-equality is not a necessary condition for type-and-value equality, even for interned types like int and str.

@alcinnz Yup, exhaustive search gives the following four-element example:

This satisfies (a * b) * c = (a * c) * b, but
• 1 * 2 = 4 ≠ 1 = 2 * 1; and
• (1 * 2) * 3 = 2 ≠ 1 = 1 * (2 * 3).

I'm not claiming to know a non-group structure where you can usefully do Diffie–Hellman, but I wouldn't rule it out just yet.
