I know Trump likes to present himself as a «stable genius» but the reality is that he’s an unstable moron, with an attention span slightly less than an average goldfish. And this time around, he’s surrounded himself with people even less competent than he is. Our best hope is this administation implodes under the sheer weight of their own incompetence before the damage they do is irreparable.
Musk has become the very definition of a foreign insurrectionist. He is attempting to use his money and influence to destabilise the governments of countries other than his own, and should be subject to the same sorts of sanctions and restrictions as Russian oligarchs.
FPÖ — an Austrian politcal party founded by a former Nazi SS officer and whose main political platform is «remigration» of refugees and immigrants — win the Austrian national election with 29%.
We live in fucking dark times when these dangerous lunatics come to power in several nations.
I followed the Democratic nomination campaigns in 2020 (as I usually do), and was hoping Elizabeth Warren would win. Kamela Harris impressed early on, but seemed to lose steam pretty early.
However, there is absolutely no doubt in my mind that she is the correct nominee for the US Democratic Party in 2024. She has faults, but so does every candidate, both past, present, and, no doubt, future. She is, however, undoubtably a candidate with more intelligence and empathy than Trump (low bar, I know), with more wit and ability than Trump (again, low bar) and her experience as VP gives her an insight into the workings of both national and international governance the US needs.
From a European socialst perspective, she’s pretty conservative — but then again, the US would never elect someone with a European socialist perspective.
I hope the US electorate is smart enough to see that Harris is the president they need, and also give the Democrats a majority in the House and Senate.
Americans on social media are on the whole as bad as American tourists abroad. Absolutely no understanding about the fact they are surrounded by people with different traditions, cultures, and norms than themselves.
The US presidential election affects all of us, but since there is nothing the rest of us can do, the constant spamming of all timelines with election news and hand wringing causes nothing but stress and resentment.
I am not generally someone who calls for CWs but in this case: please, PLEASE, do use them.
But together, Canada, USA, Mexico (which is no. 14 in the world) — ie. North America — are more than twice the the size of China and, in fact, bigger than the largest country in the world, Russia. So yes, North America is so damn big.
Should there be better rail offerings in North America? Of course there should. But the problems posed by sheer size are non-trivial.
* depending on how you count, USA can be larger than China — but they are regardless pretty close.
If someone tells you capitalism is about freedom, show them this. Capitalism was not, is not, and will never be about freedom — it is about ensuring capitalists can concentrate as much weath as possible about themselves, while simultaneously brutally destroying anyone and anything that threatens that concentration of wealth.
Repeat after me: a university is *not* a corporation, and should not be run like one. The former exists for the pursuit of knowledge, while the latter for the pursuit of profits. These are mutually incompatible.
