Truxnell (truxnell@fedi.voltaicforge.com)'s status on Wednesday, 14-Jun-2023 20:18:50 JST Truxnell Debating what I do as part of my #redditmigration. I've gotten on #tildes which I'm quite enjoying, and I'd like to #selfhost a #kbin single-user instance as my frontend for a #Reddit style UI, but then I'd have **two** #fediverse handles! Same if I join a nice kbin instance. It'd be great to have my replies on threads to be the same handle as here.
I know I can follow kbin/#lemmy instances from my #soapbox instance but trying to cram a link aggregator style feed into a microblog style feed isn't going to work well.
Not even sure if self-hosting kbin and trying to federate myself is going to work as well as this instance has.
@feditips - Any sage advice for the cleanest path forward for those wanting to do both? -

Truxnell (truxnell@fedi.voltaicforge.com)'s status on Friday, 09-Jun-2023 16:13:22 JST Truxnell I'm dissapointed to hear your feedback on Lemmy after all the buzz about it. I was going to dabble in self-hosting a federated version for a play, and It looks like ill look at/go down the kbin route now.
I'm honestly a little tired of having to vet our devs political views before self hosting and want to buck the trend of making *everything* political/opinionated, but I cant ignore genocide denial (or tankie honestly) -

Truxnell (truxnell@fedi.voltaicforge.com)'s status on Friday, 09-Jun-2023 14:32:25 JST Truxnell I'm looking into those three but already started coming across the 'Oh don't use X because devs support Y' which Im getting tired off.
I expect ill spin one up for a play around soon though. -

I settled on soapbox despite the harrowing claims of Alex online, and figured I'd also for to 'see for myself' and follow him.
So far, having his opinions/shitposting in my timeline and software in my cluster hasn't actually murdered my family, burnt down my house or ruined my credit rating - is almost like echo chambers aren't always right?

Truxnell (truxnell@fedi.voltaicforge.com)'s status on Friday, 09-Jun-2023 14:21:48 JST Truxnell It will take time to get the general crowd but I'm also not convinced it *needs* to be everything for everyone. I'm also not convinced we need a specific, seperate design as a 'link aggregator' as really Reddit turned into more a 'set of posts/replies in a certain topic' which seems like it could be handled with the toolset we apear to have today.
You've convinced me to look into Nostr harder. -

Truxnell (truxnell@fedi.voltaicforge.com)'s status on Friday, 09-Jun-2023 13:45:24 JST Truxnell @alex With the coming implosion of Reddit, do you have thoughts on the Fedi's place in the new link aggregation world? Is activitypub/Fedi the way to go forward? Is it time to start self hosting instances? Does the pope shit in the woods? -

Truxnell (truxnell@fedi.voltaicforge.com)'s status on Friday, 27-Jan-2023 07:32:30 JST Truxnell Awesome. I understand single-user instances aren't the primary focus - but upgraded docs for docker will be great. I think I've figured it out by reading the docker code & fiddling a bit, but my currently soapbox install is just unzipped in the container which isn't perfect from a upgrading/robustness point of view
I assume the best practise would be
* run 1 instance of rebased stricly as an api backed with a DB
* run 1-x instances of soapbox pointed to the API container depending on traffic/High Availability desires. (with the usual load balancer/ingress in front of them)
This would allow me to review/merge upgrade PR's as new docker tags become available independently for both streams and avoids (most) downtime when updating -

Truxnell (truxnell@fedi.voltaicforge.com)'s status on Friday, 27-Jan-2023 07:31:55 JST Truxnell 100% agree, Id never want a project to stop supporting a 'from source' install (and also agree it should be the first supported approach). I've used Docker for years at home selfhosting but Id never want any project to ONLY support docker, its just one approach with its own set of pros/cons. -

Truxnell (truxnell@fedi.voltaicforge.com)'s status on Friday, 27-Jan-2023 06:51:22 JST Truxnell @alex I'm running rebased/soapbox in my homelab k8s cluster like a madman - just wondering your stance on your docker containers in gitlab?
Feels like the community instructions/focus is on a traditional install and I wasn't sure if there was much focus/interest on the dockers you have in the repo, or if they were even more for dev testing over usage. -

I recently got a hankering to self host an instance to sate my curiosity & selfhosting obsession.
I read things like 'dont use rebased, Alex is a literal nazi'. Direct quote.
I wasn't going to look at the drama and just use what I wanted as I'm tired of the pitchfork mob mentality.
I just opened that profile, saw Lolli, 'pleroma maintainer', pinned tweets 'is Zelenskyy on trial yet' and 'heres a link documentating Ukrainian warcrimes against trans' and noped the fuck outta there.
I don't know what software I'll use long-term, but it sure as heck won't be vanilla pleroma.
