    @quad Well porn sites by default seems ridiculously good at self-hosting, probably because no one dares to host them.

    And like they host videos, outside of porn almost nobody does that at a large scale except youtube and streaming services.

    But yeah, quick `drill NS pornhub.com` now shows two providers and a bunch of nameservers on each of those, and a lot of TLDs.

    @quad In fact reminds me of https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2016_Dyn_cyberattack like seriously, none of those would have any kind of redundancy for DNS, the easiest thing to have redundant.

      DDoS attacks on Dyn
      On October 21, 2016, three consecutive distributed denial-of-service attacks were launched against the Domain Name System (DNS) provider Dyn. The attack caused major Internet platforms and services to be unavailable to large swathes of users in Europe and North America. The groups Anonymous and New World Hackers claimed responsibility for the attack, but scant evidence was provided. As a DNS provider, Dyn provides to end-users the service of mapping an Internet domain name—when, for instance, entered into a web browser—to its corresponding IP address. The distributed denial-of-service (DDoS) attack was accomplished through numerous DNS lookup requests from tens of millions of IP addresses. The activities are believed to have been executed through a botnet consisting of many Internet-connected devices—such as printers, IP cameras, residential gateways and baby monitors—that had been infected with the Mirai malware.     @quad Funny thing with cloud resiliency is well… you're likely going to just use a single provider anyway, so if they fuck up something like BGP or their cluster, your whole infra is down. (Or OVH fire lol)

    While otherwise you could have your own machines at two different datacenters (or one on-prem and backup at a datacenter).

    @rsc I know it triggered some projects to move away from autotools (typically meson instead) but that's all I've seen really change.

    Like I'm not seeing much more people/projects than before care about subjects like reproducibility of artifacts, source auditing, or bootstrapping.
