@slothrop (funny you ask, I carry a Bluetooth thermometer) I know I’ve used this bivy down to 12F (-11C) many times without issue and no condensation.

The upper nylon is wet proof and has a DWR coating but I wouldn’t use it in rain except for emergency. If there’s fog/mist and chance of dew or frost I just bring a tarp (or more often don’t go out, I like nice conditions).

Also, I use a winter quilt and insulated inflatable when it’s colder (plus down balaclava and booties).

Just came across some fun pics. Ishmael mostly, but sometimes his friend Peter. These dogs followed me everywhere. This was 2019 around Cochiguaz in Chile’s Elqui valley. Might have shared one of them before. They’d run up into the mountains with me all day. Cool dogs.

! Not recommend, just what I do !

I often have a small, light ground sheet (Tyvek or Polycro), redundant but nice.

My diy bivy goes on top. It’s very lightweight ~5oz (UL dyneema & ripstop).

One of my many diy or modded pads goes inside the bivy (pictured on top) with a space blanket under it.

Then my summer or winter down quilt (summer one this trip) goes inside and I’ve been using car wash sponges lately for pillows.

The “Vegetation Fire” has sprung up by Castaic lake. I just noticed it outside and got the notification from Watch Duty as I was taking a picture.

2/ Now called Hughes Fire for Lake Hughes road. This is getting big. New photos from the front yard and top of my trail.

Winds are heavy south west Santa Anas but any spread north risks Lake Hughes, Three Points, Neenach (Hikertown), Gorman, and everything between including 30 miles of PCT that burned in the Lake Fire (2019?). The south west, Castaic, Piru, Fillmore, Santa Paula, and everything down hwy 126 is in danger.

Desert bound for a couple days. Angeles national Forest closure has been extended until the 24th so heading out into the desert it is.

Gas station earlier today felt like a scene out of a disaster movie, then I remembered yeah we live in one. Lines going every direction for every pump, trucks filling reservoir tanks, every car had a couple extra canisters to fill. Everyone in our area out of power and getting gas for generators.

@slothrop for sure this stuff happens a lot more than we imagine. A ranger at the Grand Canyon once told me they get about 5 emergency heli lifts per day during the summer.

@slothrop oh to be a fly on the wall listening to the planning conversations.

The SAR post added a “what went right, what went wrong” note. They commended them for:
- not splitting up
- stopping when they were in trouble
- having a 2 way communication device

All of which were avoidable, but cute that they looked for something positive in it all.

@slothrop it’s mind boggling. I thought it was a joke post and they specifically said “plus 5 gallons of water” 😳

Get ready for this interesting story from Inyo county Search & Rescue.

Two people left the Mount Whitney trailhead at 6 pm with 150 pounds of brand new gear and 5 gallons of water. By 3 am they succumbed to exhaustion after making it only 2.7 miles (it’s 3 to their planned camp site, 11 to the summit). They pitched their tent on the trail, woke up to 2 inches of snow and contacted SAR with iPhone satellite for rescue.
