wloi think it's funny how when a big service goes down, every network nerd in the world wonders why and stops what they're doing to figure out what the problem is at the same time. when we figure out the answer, we go back to being glad it's not our job to fix that and continue on with our day.
Most of my professional experience is in corporate IT, but my special interests lie in free software, distributed systems, and recently lisp languages :)
Feel free to DM me if you want to see a resume, otherwise my account metadata should give you a general idea of who I am.
@daya it doesn't really matter where the webmail is hosted. i'd prefer to have the web accessible from mail.phantoma.online but i've been meaning to do some more infrastructure changes before that. there's no security difference with what part of my services are hosted where so long as I don't move the MX record off of the root of my domain.
new blog post, the first in a series about personal identity. maybe i'll find a long-form writing style that feels natural by the time i finish the rest :)
idk. the tech job market is generally pretty fucked rn. where are the jobs that benefit normal people. my friend who works on a farm doesn't need to battle with the idea of his field funding mass surveillance. he goes out, picks vegetables all summer, and sells them to the local farm. everyone around here benefits from his work in a pretty direct way.
my options as someone versed in tech feel super limited in this sense. if i want to actively harm the world, i can work for a military contractor or in surveillance. or both. if i want to at least keep the status quo, which isn't really much better, i can sell my soul to insurance companies, banks, or someone in a financial sector. but those people aren't helping anyone in local communities.
what do i do. where are the jobs that benefit society. why did we as a society decide that technology should be used as a tool to do widespread harm. i don't want to do that.

wlothe fucked up thing is that all of my connections that could get me paid are like. i can probably find a really well paying job at dell supplying servers to the DOD if i wanted. i could get a job that exploits AI-identified trends to make efficient stock trades. i have connections who work at some of the biggest tech companies in the world that could probably give me a good referral. the thought of it all fills me with dread. the world could probably be fed to me on fucking a platter if i would just reach out and grab it. i'm in a very privileged position, in a privileged social class. is it immature of me to reject all of that? is it wrong?
