@bob
What are the strengths of the fediverse that cannot be copied by capitalist projects financed by advertising and surveillance?
Very nice! I added the project to #delightful #Fediverse client curated list :)
Currently #Dendrite is labeled as bad quality in the Yunohost App list. Will this change?
hmm, yes, thank you. I might resort to scripting the configs but was hoping to find a tool to track that automatically for me.
I started working at a flex office and there's no guarantee what dual monitor combination I have on a regular workday.
@az I suspect there's some nice tool to be found somewhere.
But the search takes time. Like I just found #Gnome extension "Multiple Monitor Panels", but it doesn't describe its features, the project is outdated but an updated fork (by a random person) exists and I might install just to try it out. Only to find it does something diffferent.. maybe ?
@hans no, it is my main laptop install.
Old laptop dated from 2013, so it was a very long time I went to all the hoops to get a smooth system running. And now one by one I get thrown the issues to solve to hopefully get things in order soon, and do some useful work ?
I love #FOSS and #Linux, adore all people tirelessly creating it. So we can bend our computers to our will.
And I am trying really hard not to be frustrated by all the many, many issues I encounter installing a new laptop.
Drivers, configs, app versions, flavours, variations, flexibility, bugs..
"Here's a FOSS project for you, just install it as critical infra to find out what it does, and if it is usable to you"
"Oh yeah, it is outdated, a random guy forked it. Use that. Might work"
@az thank you. Yes, that might be an option, though I was hoping for something less involved and preferably automatically detects different laptop + external monitor combinations.
I am working in a flex workspace with no guarantee which monitor I connect to the next day, and to manually config stuf.. well, only if there's no other way.
Commercial is well-done.. like a steak is well-done. It is becoming more and more apparent how #Apple's #privacy stance is just their own little marketing gimmick.
Polished and shiny on the outside, like anything Apple, but beware.. there can be a ? within.
It's a mixed bag they offer.
@hans can imagine. Finding a good balance. It helps having Following that's well-aligned with interests you have.
Other than that there's opportunity to tie #Fediverse closer to local activities. At #SocialCoding we think about this with #LOCI:
https://discuss.coding.social/t/idea-local-open-chapters-initiative-loci/42
It will help when fedi apps go beyond just #microblogging. Apps such as #Bonfire are going there.

#AskFedi do you know a good multi-monitor program that can handle the settings of multiple dual monitor configurations?
For #Linux #Debian #Ubuntu #GNOME
Right now I have 2 different dual monitor configs (home + work) and they require me to:
- Gnome Tweaks adjust font scaling
- #Firefox settings, adjust Default zoom factor (100% or 80%)
- Firefox settings, adjust Default font size (14pt or 12pt)
Every time I go from one to the other monitor setup. And then resize/move all open windows.
Funnily enough, I already discussed RBL technology a long time ago, and there's even an issue on it.
Making an RBL is fairly easy. I prototyped one in an afternoon using rbldns. The harder part is determining what hosts (or IPs) go into it, and continual maintenance.
I've also written up (somewhere) a set of RBL status IPs (ala the 127.0.0 block used by traditional RBLs) that reflect more fediverse-type issues.

I think you raised a very valid and accute point here. I just installed a new laptop and confronted with Snap and Flatpak for first time to get some old familiar apps insttalled, and I noticed too that in many cases it is "random dev" doing the packaging.
Now, I dunno the #security implications of these technologies, but I assume a malicious packager can do a lot of.. malicious things.
And esp. for #PasswordManager your vault becomes your most valuable digital possession.
PS. I saw on your profile that you worked on #Spamikaze some time ago.
If fighting spam, esp. on the #Fediverse still interests you, I may point you to @emacsen and @csddumi who are about to launch a project to tackle the problem.
These frustrations are understandable. On the whole one could say that saying "Implement #ActivityPub and federate" raises wrong expectations.
And that it is more accurate to say that AS/AP et al gives you foundation stones and building blocks that constitute a framework for federated app development. Unfortunately there's been a lot of ad-hoc interoperability and protocol decay. The trend is not to maturity but chaos.
I took notes on major challenges: https://discuss.coding.social/t/major-challenges-for-the-fediverse/67
The big #UI pretty color revamp of #Firefox #Android that was such a huge #usability downgrade has come to bite me again.
Today is FF Forget-Your-Addressbar-Typing-Suggestion annoyance re-celebration day for me.
- Type a "g" .. do I mean to go to Github, firefox?
- FF: No, most likely "google.co.uk"
- An "l" for LinkedIn then?
- FF: No! You want live.com
- Umm, "n" for Hacker News surely?
- FF: Netflix.com, dude.
- And if I type "new" to make it easier for ya?
- FF: newegg.com
WTF ?
#Ubuntu snap is a freaking dumpster fire.
