Yes, #BlueSky, a "crawling indexer" is exactly what I want in my social media:
https://atproto.com/guides/overview#achieving-scale
Note that the crawling indexer is made necessary for things like "likes, reposts, followers".
As in, a crawling indexer is necessary for basic functionality of BlueSky, apparently.
Compare to #ActivityPub, where no such hard requirement exists, even though a service that relies on crawling to provide recommendations (for example) could exist.
But hey, at least (if I am reading it right) they seem to have removed bollockschain from #BlueSky!
https://atproto.com/specs/atp
I mean, I don't care about BlueSky (or as I call it "Twitter's BS protocol") all that much. But I do care about how a protocol that started off in :birdsite: 's "blockchain division" suddenly drops the blockchain part.
To me that means that the cryptocurrency racket has perhaps finally jumped the Blåhaj. ?
Existence of synthesis implies the existence of ackthesis and rstthesis. :thaenkin:
@dj3ei @feditips @cuchaz @Gargron @Tech @musicmatze that's actually a valid point. And is true for all other instance software names, like Pleroma, MissKey and so on.
PSA: there is a new fedi instance called mastodon[.]tech. Confusingly, it is running Pleroma. People behind it set up a @Tech account, and reached out to me (and I can only presume others).
I told them in private what I am telling everyone in public now: I find it very sketchy, based on the interaction with that account, and on mastodon.technology-lookalike domain.
I have on good authority they are in no way affiliated with or endorsed by mastodon.technology. I will stay away from them.
"You can't censor the blockchain", episode over9000:
https://web3isgoinggreat.com/single/over-51-of-blocks-validated-on-the-ethereum-chain-are-censored
> On October 14, Ethereum reached a milestone that alarms many who have pushed for blockchains as "censorship-proof" technology. More than 51% of blocks produced in the preceding 24 hours were processed by relays that filtered out transactions involving Tornado Cash, a crypto mixing service that was added to the U.S. sanctions list in August.
I love @web3isgreat ?
@puniko "in" in Polish is "w", so "INHALES" in Polish is "WHALES" and I think that's beautiful.

Looks like #Telegram leaks usernames in #TLS SNI:
https://nitter.it/fo0_/status/1580146963579740160
?♀️
TLS SNI is sent in *clear text*, because it is a mechanism that informs the server hosting multiple websites on a single IP address which TLS certificate to present to the client.
Putting username in SNI makes it *trivial* for anyone listening on the wire to track who and when is communicating with Telegram servers. Add some timing analysis and one can reason about who is talking to whom.
Metadata kills.
#Fediverse: the best social network money can't buy.
@EUIPO fun fact: got the link to this post from a friend who is not on fedi. When I asked why the fedi link not the twitter link (after all, this is cross-posted), they said: that was the first result in google.
Funny how :birdsite:'s insistence on walling-up their garden more and more backfires on them!

@mmarif 5.0.0 being the next release of... Gitea? Codeberg?
Gave feedback on @EU_Commission 's hare-brained scheme to scan all images on our devices for child sexual abuse materials, all the time:

If you're in the #EU ?? , you should consider voicing your opposition to this too. The comment form is open until September 12th, here:

Is there a hashtag one can use to signal: "I am not looking for suggestions, but merely venting"?
@dachary @bob @gna I generally agree with the sentiment. However, we must not kid ourselves that "federated services are immune to centralization" — just look at e-mail and GMail.
It takes way more work to centralize a federated service, but it can be done. A strong community actively working against that is always going to be necessary.
@puniko thanks!
@puniko totally. but also points to the fact that relying on those centralized services is not a winning strategy.
There's a reason "collateral freedom" uses the word "collateral": innocent websites might get hit. As they just did.
