    @bob since federated services are immune to centralization and user lock-in, sustaining their development requires innovative business models.

    @gna is trying to come up with a new one, never tried before AFAIK. A federated forge hosting online service is run by a collective of independent Free Software service providers. It is a showcase that reflects well on their reputation.

    The key is "collective". A showcase run by a single service company, is not new ? And toxic.

      @dachary @bob @gna

      There's space for that within the current forum categorization, and that's within the #FSDL category as additional sub-categories.

      But there are potentially very many of those, and many ways to break down the Free Software Development Lifecycle into separate components, so I've left that for later.

      Other than that a good forum topic might be dedicated to explore particular advantages and opportunities that exist.

      @bob @gna @humanetech business models compatible with federated online services would deserve a category of its own on social.coding, don't you think?

      And I mean business models where federated online services are the primary source of income for an organization.

      Not when they cost more than they make which is, by definition, not sustainable. People burn out, eventually. And it is the first service to be sacrificed when the organization has financial troubles.

      @dachary @bob @gna I generally agree with the sentiment. However, we must not kid ourselves that "federated services are immune to centralization" — just look at e-mail and GMail.

      It takes way more work to centralize a federated service, but it can be done. A strong community actively working against that is always going to be necessary.
