@thomasfuchs I’ve heard versions of this and thought versions of this. Is there a name for this idea? In my mind it’s similar to “if you were actually a psychic, you wouldn’t be in this strip mall”. I’m not a Cory Doctorow fan but I envy his ability to use a word like “enshittifcation” and get everybody talking about it.

@inthehands The idea that intelligence confers expertise was utterly entrenched at Google. It causes a sort of pigheaded refusal to study the literature or understand the history of a problem before rushing in. Inevitably, people who have no business doing a thing will reinvent solutions that have been repeatedly proven not to work, because they’re too clever to accept that they can’t instantly derive all the answers from first principles.

@inthehands My standard joke there was that if someone suddenly started spurting blood from their eye, rather than call an ambulance, their co-worker’s response would be “I’ll figure it out, I’m good with computers!”

@thomasfuchs I enjoy VR gaming a lot. I have no concern for how dorky I look as it can't get any worse. Meta Quest 3 is the sweet spot IMO.

I don't think Apple expects this specific product to be a hit. They are hedging against the possibility that "spatial computing" will be the next big thing that shifts the dominant computing platform away from mobile. They can afford to invest on getting out in front, they can't afford to be caught asleep at the wheel. ...

I was literally about to post "Today's #project is to see if I can set up my own @elk deployment, maybe on CloudFlare. I don't think there are any docs for that yet."

Then I thought maybe I should double check that last statement, and lo! Two days ago https://docs.elk.zone/docs/deployment/netlify was merged. We live in a world of miracle and wonder. And an awesome open-source community.

@mastohost Thanks for the update! I thought maybe it had to do with overload from new signups or my instance had a cache problem.

Hope they resolve it soon and it doesn't cause you too many headaches.

@mastohost Is there a problem with the CDN? Getting 503 errors for all images on my instance. (e.g. https://cdn.masto.host/mastomastocom/cache/media_attachments/files/109/667/079/856/674/595/original/10e35183272c9e15.png)
