@grin Worst would be if it got a thousand boosts and then I realised I'd made a dreadful mistake and ended up posting Misinformation On The Fediverse

Dan Fixes Coin-Ops (ifixcoinops@mastodon.social)'s status on Friday, 10-Nov-2023 14:12:08 JST Dan Fixes Coin-Ops But what if Jimmy Bigot's not on the same server as you? Say you're on tootings.website and JB's on wankers.horse. Well, you can block Jimmy Bigot or, if you take a look at wankers.horse in general and Do Not Like What You See No Siree Bob, you can block the entirety of wankers.horse, but do be aware that wankers can just log out of wankers.horse and see of your account whatever any other internet user sees.

Dan Fixes Coin-Ops (ifixcoinops@mastodon.social)'s status on Friday, 10-Nov-2023 14:12:08 JST Dan Fixes Coin-Ops Second, you might well imagine if Jimmy Bigot turns up and posts hate on your admin's hard drive, they may well be quite miffed at paying actual money to enable Jimmy Bigot's Hate Hole. You see it as JB posting on a website, your admin thinks "He's posting that crap on MY MACHINE and I'm PAYING for it!" There's no advertising here. Jimmy Bigot doesn't make Server Admin any money. Jimmy Bigot COSTS Server Admin money, so if you report JB, you're more likely to have your report taken seriously.

Dan Fixes Coin-Ops (ifixcoinops@mastodon.social)'s status on Thursday, 08-Dec-2022 01:54:52 JST Dan Fixes Coin-Ops #feditip: go to https://{your mastodon server}/users/{any username}.rss to get an RSS feed for your RSS reader.
Level 2: go about your day without internet, then in the evening settle down at your Computer Desk with a nice cup of tea to RSS-digest the day's shitposts.
Level 3: Aggregates your RSS feeds into epub format. Load the output onto your 2000's e-ink e-reader via USB cable. Sit in an overstuffed armchair with a nearby lamp, say aloud "Ah, yes, today's internet" and sip your port.

Dan Fixes Coin-Ops (ifixcoinops@mastodon.social)'s status on Friday, 11-Nov-2022 22:30:18 JST Dan Fixes Coin-Ops Seen a lotta posts about how to use CWs and such, haven't yet seen one about person-to-admin-to-server-level moderation/blocking but have seen some discussions where talking about that would clear up some confusion and worries so, here goes.
You have more power here than you did on the other place, both as an individual and as part of a collective, because of how federation works.

Dan Fixes Coin-Ops (ifixcoinops@mastodon.social)'s status on Friday, 11-Nov-2022 22:30:17 JST Dan Fixes Coin-Ops You're probably aware by now that the Fediverse isn't one website, it's a whole bunch of websites that speak to each other through a common protocol, passing your posts around and processing replies and faves and boosts and all that jazz, and that's what we're talking about when we talk about federation. Each website is owned and operated by Some Random Community-Minded Internet Person. Not a company, just some rando like you, and this rando has final say on what they want on their server.

Dan Fixes Coin-Ops (ifixcoinops@mastodon.social)'s status on Friday, 11-Nov-2022 22:30:16 JST Dan Fixes Coin-Ops This internet rando - probably not rich, has a job just like you, normal everyday person you'd bump into in the pub - is paying for the computer their website lives on, and the electricity and bandwidth it uses. Someone's paying for you to post, paying for the disk space your account takes up, doing the work of moderation and systems administration. So first, it'd be a kindness to find out who your admin is and ask them politely if they'd like some money.

Dan Fixes Coin-Ops (ifixcoinops@mastodon.social)'s status on Friday, 11-Nov-2022 17:22:03 JST Dan Fixes Coin-Ops #feditip for newbies, especially the ones who post a lot of politics stuff: use the CW or "Content Warning" feature if you want people to boost your posts.
For example, if you're posting about American politics, you might CW with the subject line "American politics" or "USPol" for short.
Using CWs has been part of the established culture here for years, and people generally don't boost unCW'd politics posts. If you think something's important and want to give it visibility, use a CW.

Dan Fixes Coin-Ops (ifixcoinops@mastodon.social)'s status on Tuesday, 08-Nov-2022 16:04:28 JST Dan Fixes Coin-Ops Boy I went on a journey of Not Getting The Point here, despite The Point slapping me in my pocket every few seconds: THE NEWBIES ARE SIGNING UP WITH THEIR REAL ACTUAL FULL HUMAN NAMES.
*That's* why I'm seeing so many people do things that to me seem bizarre. It's because I'm used to interacting with raccoons, crows, witches, impossible geometric shapes, inflatable coatis and the anthropomorphic personification of paint smell
