Take a second to fully digest that graph and realize how vital it is that we work on developing an informed population. Education is the only vaccine against disinformation and, ultimately, totalitarianism.
@WarnerCrocker Guts? Or ethics? Because it would only be the latter keeping me from doing something extreme. And I'm not sure it's in the long-term interests of the country for both parties to sink to the lowest common denominator of our electorate.
@WarnerCrocker I mean, if he does something extreme as an official Presidential act, he's immune from legal consequences, no? That ridiculous ruling goes both ways.
When your party enthusiastically chooses as its leader a convicted felon awaiting sentencing, you are in no way the party of law and order...you are the opposite.
A 20-year-old registered Republican trying to assassinate #Trump in the name of God because of DJT's connections to pedophile Epstein is not the backstory I expected.
Religious extremism plus easy access to guns plus a lack of critical thinking makes for a dangerous and unpredictable society.
No amount of adaptation to climate change can fix Miami’s water problems.
I fear many Americans won't take #ClimateChange seriously until a US city of millions becomes literally uninhabitable. And that could be sooner than most people realize.
@shoq Yes...eliminating a feature most find useful because a tiny minority of use cases could be abusive is a dumb approach to anything. We would've outlawed roads (criminals use them to evade police) and telephones (criminals use them to defraud people) and knives (duh!) long ago if this was a sound way to evaluate things.
@shoq Social media is an inherently unsafe space because you're dealing with other humans. Some risk is assumed.
We certainly don't have to let it be the Wild West in terms of moderation, but cracking down on anything that could potentially be perceived as harmful is simply unreasonable. As with virtually all things, moderation (in all senses of that word) is key.
@RichardShaw@srfirehorseart@radlschorsch@academicchatter@edutooters [hesitantly raises hand] I'm an academic and the only social media platform I use mainly for professional use is LinkedIn. My others are primarily or strictly personal. That said, the Xitter meltdown led me to create this account mostly in search of community, not fame or a platform. Not finding it here, I've started using Reddit more, which is great for my topic-focused info-gathering needs. I'm online mostly to learn.
Saw this map posted on another network and it helped me realize some things I'd never appreciated before, which is just how whopping huge the agricultural part of California is, and, related, just how bowl-like the topography is. Really fascinating. #Maps#California
Went to the funeral of a WWII veteran today. A heavy machine-gunner in the 100th Infantry Division, he helped retake France in 1944. Purple Heart. Two bronze service stars. His division liberated over 100 French villages & towns, never once retreating. Legit war hero.
He was 98.
And he was Jewish.
And he was my father-in-law.
And anyone advocating we teach "both sides" of the Holocaust or questioning the ethics of our fighting Nazis with every weapon we had is asking for a punch in the face.
