it might seem like just making television shows is hard and takes a lot of effort but have you watched television shows? you can make a show as good as the Jack Palance-hosted "Ripley's Believe it or Not" series of the 1980s. you absolutely can, and their shit ran for four or five years and then got reruns in the 90s.

@vertigo has any OS used "conductor" to describe its kernel yet? because I think conductor is a good kernel name.

may have realized this morning that it is highly likely we see a decrease in enforcement efforts by the FCC in the coming years.

if ever you were going to dip your toes into the world of pirate FM radio broadcast, doing it when the FCC was hobbled would seem to be a pretty good choice.

    just saying.

this is your aperiodic reminder that periodic reminders or regular reminders should adhere to a fixed period or schedule that is regular, and that any such reminder that does not fit said period or schedule should be denoted as aperiodic or irregular as deemed appropriate under penalty of absolutely nothing but excessive pedantry. thank.

activitypub server that "freezes" posts made locally after a configurable interval (say, six months by default, or some such), removing them from the database and making the posts non-interactive, but rendering the frozen posts in html and json as flat files on disk, with a small script to check for authorization on a get request that passes the flat file through if authorization is successful, but not recording new favs, replies, boosts, etc, and returning a well-specified error response whenever a remote actor attempts to do so.

I did a toy implementation of an activitypub server at one point a long while back that just used the filesystem as a database and honestly I don't remember why I stopped pursuing that, though I believe there are a couple of other similar implementations at this point.

like, maybe we don't need third normal form relational data for our various stream of consciousness shitposts and rant threads?

the rule for listening to Elton John's "Goodbye Yellow Brick Road" (1973) album is that from the moment you put the needle on the record at the beginning of "Funeral for a Friend" (one of the finest instrumental lead-ins to an album you will ever experience) you are allowed to turn up the volume, but not down, so when you turn it up to hear one of the soft passages that's where it is. take the dynamic range. take it. it is good for you and the industry has been systematically eliminating it from your diet. you are welcome.

The toot-lab is financed by crowdfunding (primarily from my wife's and my paychecks) instead of venture capital not because we don't know that venture capital exists, not because we don't have bills to pay, and not because venture capital isn't willing to give money to new social media platforms. It's mostly because I have a habit of biting VCs hard when they introduce themselves which has a tendency to make them less inclined to want to enter a business relationship. Try it. Bite a VC. Just chomp right down on their arm. You surely will not be disappointed by biting a VC.

@silverwizard and if you hook it up over usb, the cf drive will just mount as a removable drive on your compy anyway, so once it's installed it's just a weird ssd haha

compactflash is one of my favorite formats honestly - not too small so easy to lose, not too heavy, good speed, good capacity, lots of longevity and capacity diversity, big fan big fan
