successfully avoided using the phrase "let them get freaky with [X]" in a work communication about desiring to give an upstream optimization fewer constraints
:boost_requested: the work book club is nearly done with clean code and they're looking for the next one! if anyone has any recommendations for that "kind" of thing (general interest, approachable for juniors, not too language-specific.... but, um, better than uncle bob pls) I am interested. special interest in stuff on the newer end that people might not know about 👀
it’s exhausting how seriously journalists take the claims of users of “algospeak” that it has an algorithmic effect on reach. it’s as though they were to see shit like https://www.reddit.com/r/mallninjashit/comments/iz7b2y/mall_ninja_via_normal_stuff/ and gamely echo the rationale that “quad carry offers the benefits of being armed, but times four.”
the “cute winter boots” bullshit isn’t going everywhere because it’s evading algorithmic suppression, it’s going everywhere because adults love the feeling of speaking in codes for all the same reasons fifth graders do (signals inclusion, savviness, has the aesthetic of something that “matters”)
if someone has made a change in their personal appearance, the acceptable workplace reactions are:
1. a question ("do mine eyes deceive me" request for confirmation of change: fine) 2. a compliment (sincerity or the appearance thereof: not required) 3. silence
"Please do not add a comment on your question or on an answer to say "Thank you". Comments are meant for requesting clarification, leaving constructive criticism, or adding relevant but minor additional information – not for socializing. If you want to say "thank you," vote on or accept that person's answer, or simply pay it forward by providing a great answer to someone else's question."
i wave a blessing in the direction of Dave the Portlander who taught me in childhood that taking the holographic Intel Inside sticker off a PC and putting it on a toaster was the height of comedy
but the world didn’t understand your lessons, Dave
the toasters are vulnerable to speculative execution bugs now
@evan This constitutes feedback, then, that what you have written is not coming off as presenting varied viewpoints in the way that those who believe in them might. That seems like a shame, because there's definitely a lot worth chewing over on these topics.
@evan What you present as one side gets its opinions fleshed out in little statements, and what you present as the other side gets its opinions followed by "[People who disagree] just don't get it", more than once. Do you think that's even-handed?
