Firefox is frustrating for me, since it’s a great browser under the hood and does a lot better than Chromium can and will ever do, but at the same time the way the browser is being managed to fill Mozilla’s whims and not what users want leaves me worried for its future, and fanboys will just let them do it because it’s not Google. 🫤
Anyone got a music player for Linux that’s fast and also supports multi-value tags and song ratings?
MusicBee is good but WINE. Quod Libet is also good but a single-threaded Python app. MPD is good but has no rating support. Strawberry is good but has no multi-value support.
With how slow Bluesky is right now, it’s worth pointing out this is why federation, despite its flaws, is a good thing. Right now Bsky.social could easily be DDoSed and we’d all get disconnected. The fediverse is much more spread out and thus more resilient to those attacks.
Granted, there are giant instances like Mastodon.social that have the same problem, but every time it goes down it’s an important lesson for people, to pick smaller instances. I’ve got a friend who’s on his own self-hosted Akkoma instance now because Mastodon.social was getting too slow.
Something that kinda rubs me the wrong way with the recent Gamers Nexus video - and it’s not really Steve’s fault, to be clear - is that there are a lot of people going “I watch Linus for entertainment, GN (or some other techtuber) is the REAL review channel!!!!!!!!!!!!!” in response.
It just feels like they’re implicitly shitting on people who are new or inexperienced with the subject at hand. People have to remember that Linus is probably one of, if not the most popular tech YouTubers especially in PC gaming, and people who are new to that thing are going to go to him first. Hell, when I was looking for component reviews, I looked at his videos, as well as Gamers Nexus and JayzTwoCents (the latter two mainly for the ASUS AM5 drama). Even deadmau5 has gotten tips from him (Linus hooked him up with 45Drives, and got a video out of it).
Granted, Linus should be taking more responsibility for that reason alone or not trying to make LTT Labs a thing. A similar entertainment reviewer is DankPods, but I think he handles it better - he knows he’s the first one at the door for audio reviews because of his reach and entertainment factor, but he doesn’t try to step on the toes of more objective reviewers like Crinacle (in fact, Crinacle’s a fan - he was subbed to his Patreon iirc). He gets the basics covered while others can do the rest.
What I like about the fediverse, as well as Bluesky, is if you don’t like the base client, you can use something else or even code up something of your own. I think that should be an important issue to raise for everyone after the whole Reddit API shit and the death of TweetDeck.
Fediverse does have its issues (e.g. Mastodon API vs. everyone else) but I’d rather deal with that than deal with Twitter and Reddit’s bullshit.
