@shibao@Relected@post.ebin.club police mostly, I'm not sure how much it was actually used vs other options, though I know the preferred model for beating up protestors now is the C50, hence it getting surplused
@Polychrome@poly.cybre.city IRC is formed into closed networks more for technical than social reasons, it's not a federated protocol as you'd think of one.
Talking to facebook under a non disclosure agreement about the fediverse when you run a large instance, or have control over the development of fedi software, is an unforced error. It destroys your credibility, because there's a lot of sinister possibilities for what Facebook is looking for, and it means you can't deny them, and can't explain your position on it.
Considering the circumstances, some obvious possibilities are:
* Rewriting ToSes to include a copyright license grant for content which favours Facebook * Committing to not suspend P92 * Allowing advertising which originates from Facebook * Aligning moderation policy * Agreeing to allow Facebook to dictate changes to software
Of course, Facebook is a large company, and can offer substantial bribes to make these happen. The people who agreed to the meeting under NDA agreed not to disclose this, if it did happen.
I think that there's something quite immoral about leaving your users in the dark on such important points, an oath of secrecy to Facebook of all companies is not something we should take lightly.
the zip tld is extremely dangerous, my computer has already mistaken the entirety of google for a zip file and i now have hundreds of thousands of sensitive account details, shit fuck, fuck,
I really dislike how much surveillance has become a normalised part of everyday life. look too interesting? doing something interesting? having a bad day? there's a serious risk people are going to have their phones out recording you, and now your once-ephemeral existence in public is forever fixed in a context you have no control at all over
"a11y" is so fucking ironic because instead of being able to just know what it means from general language knowledge, you may need to use a search engine if you haven't come across it before
the strawman there is fascinating anyway, the place cars have in US society is the result of regulatory capture, industry interests and politicians have tried very hard to make car ownership essentially mandatory, even to the point of criminalising pedestrians (jaywalking laws for example). Cars and roads become something which restricts your freedom, and they become a pretext for policing everyday life.
On the other hand, firearm ownership isn't mandatory, it's a right conceived a long time ago. There's nuance of course, but that's not really relevant to this analogy, the government doesn't force you to own a gun in order to live everyday life to satisfy firearms manufacturers.
"Artists should be paid for their work" is a wonderful smokescreen, because it's the sort of sentiment everynyan can agree with, doesn't engage with more fundamental questions about workers' rights, and uses sympathy for small-time artists to protect the interests of companies like Elsevier and Disney.
To put this another way, the venn diagram of those who have meaningful access to recourse under copyright law, and those who're most likely to get away with large-scale violations of copyright law is a circle (and it's individuals and entities with money and lawyers, it's not your local furry artist, or a kid downloading a game which hasn't been sold for three decades).
So, the question isn't whether artists should be paid, it's whether we should torch libraries and jail people for a type of "theft" which doesn't deprive anyone of property, it's a question of whether society should be shaped to protect the interests of shareholders.
Obviously, as a shareholder myself (I love owning stocks, I have over three hundred confirmed stocks and graduated top of my MBA class), I think that capital punishment for copyright violation is the only way forward.
The thing that's funnier about all this is that a lot of the justifications continue to make zero sense. Online-only fedi-related events aren't a new thing, and the sum total of the expenses is usually a few quid thrown at a VPS (e.g. fediplace or fediblock), it's never been so much that it's really made much sense to ask for contributions, and nor does anyone really care much about branding
So, hachyderm.io has attracted some controversy recently, let's cover all the main points:
- They are intentionally inviting corporations onto their instance
- Their rules forbid 'colonialism' (they have a domain under a colonial TLD, .io is the TLD for the BIOT, which islanders were violently expelled from to build a US army base - it now has no inhabitants who are not related to this status. the rightful residents do not receive money from the sales of domains)
- Their rules forbid 'hacking' (their description notes it's an instance for 'hackers' among others)
- The admin describes herself as a "fearless leader" - The admin describes herself as a "dictator" - The about suggests that the instance is nevertheless governed on "democratic" and "anarchist" principles.
- They have defederated from Maia's instance (crimew.gay), apparently without announcement or notice, seemingly as a result of criticism of the first point (note that the entry is starred, cri***.**y, only reason given is "Violation") - Above is relevant because the instance periodically exports and recommends its blocklists ( https://github.com/hachyderm/hack/blob/main/blocklist ), a list which already includes absturztaube (specifically fab), and with no explicitly referenced criteria for exclusion, it seems reasonable to assume future exports will include Maia's instance.
Hesitant to tag this, this is meant more as a full explanation of all the nonsense I've seen so far.
