    visa office organized a talk on how to renew my visa and stuff. they started with "treat us as your friend" and then started saying shit like "if you do not do $X we will have to report you to the police, immigration and your country's embassy. this may result in you being deported and blacklisted from entering malaysia"

    talking to local chinese here in malaysia it's just not very easy for people of other races to spell/pronounce from romanized spelling, especially with no prior exposure to cn names, so it's easier to adopt a western name.

    for examle I know a guy named "chuan yun" but I still have no idea if I should spell it quan yun, quan yin, quan yuen, chuan yun, chuan yin, chuan yuen, etc.

    at chinese friends house and an uncle came up to me, asked in chinese if I speak it. since cn doesn't have one universal "no" answer, I just remembered the common one my friend says and said 不要. the guy replied "I could speak english, but [incomprehensible]" and walked away. later I realized what I said translates to "don't want to"
