okay i give up i'm just gonna power off the linode and make a backup from there

when i turn it back on to run updates it'll probably come back online on its own but anything you post after that point might disappear if i have to restore the backup :anim_shrug:

no we're not updated yet but i managed to somehow bash my head against ubuntu 20.04 enough times to update a bunch of our shit and turn jorts back on to see if it still works (it appears to still be working)

(do not tell me to update from ubuntu 20.04 i do not care i will not do it)

jorts still seems to think we're running old ruby despite me somehow managing to update ruby, though, that's not what i expected. hm

maybe that's normal because jorts predates the new version of ruby?

if i make a new backup right now i'll lose the backup made before i fucked with a bunch of shit to update ruby and PG and all the system packages (and force GPG to shut the fuck up about unsigned keys)

okay leaving it alone is just *increasing* the backlog, the feeds are still not building correctly, and i still can't upload anything but someone else managed to upload a screenshot so i'm not gonna worry about it, we're just gonna have a backlog for a few days until everyone on other instances goes to sleep probably

i'm very hungover rn but i'm slowly figuring out my various passwords to log into our crumbling server architecture

after that the biggest hurdle (and what thwarted me last time when i tried to update us) is that i do not remember what dark magicks i used to set up our reverse image hosting -- "media.jorts.horse" is a reverse proxy that points to a wasabi bucket -- and so i have no fucking idea how to update in any way without ruining that setup and killing media

the reverse image thing -- you'll see that the OP of this thread is hosted at:

but the real image location is [some wasabi URL nonsense]/horse-media/media_[blah blah]

it just automagically converts everything over so that uploads do not direct link to the wasabi bucket which is insecure, and more importantly, ugly

i wanted to update to glitch soc but glitch soc uses fucking docker packages and if my hands are in contact with my keyboard while a docker command runs in my terminal window i will instantly perish
