@jacklaridian Thank you! I’m happy you liked it! If you’re interested, have a listen to „Letters to Fred“, it‘s a song cycle we premiered last month about my friend Joanne Herzberg’s Familie, who got murdered by the Nazis. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AyvxOatnH04 (Not much to see in the video, it’s just me singing, but it has subtitles.)
@jacklaridian That’s the point: back then, no one would have thought to applaud them for choosing Nazis as villains because it was so ridiculously obvious that they are evil. Now, decades later, millions of people still watch these movies, and who knows how many kids have learned about fascism through them. Little things like this are important to preserve our collective memory.
Steven Spielberg is not getting enough credit for having the hero fight literal Nazis in his light entertainment adventure movies. Same goes for George Lucas’ dressed-like-nazis fascist protagonists. Kids need that. We need that.
There once came a man to Nantucket Who worshipped a Russian sock puppet To show his devotion He roomed at the ocean: A Motel made from his trash bucket!
I realize that Germany is much smaller and more densely populated than the US, so the distances to polling places are shorter. But on top of that, Germany votes on Sundays when the majority of eligible voters don't have to work. Democracy CAN be made easy if we WANT it!
I wonder what it’s like out there Out there way beyond them mountains Where the folks talk nice an’ the folks dress nice Like ya see in the mail order catalogs
I aim to leave this valley some day An’ find out for myself: To see all them tall buildin’s and all the street lights An’ to be one o’them folks myself

LETTERS TO FRED: A Portrait of the Herzberg Family During the Holocaust Song Cycle by Bracha Bdil
The terrible brutality of the Holocaust is so incomprehensible in its extent that it can only be understood on the basis of individual fates. This song cycle quotes from letters to the only survivor of the #Herzberg family from #Detmold.
@jens Ih, no worries, I accidentally posted before I was done writing, because I felt I should check the privacy setting, and while I was editing you had already replied!
It’s a pun, but also based on oh so many real life examples. Somehow it’s always the tenors messing things up. They are super rare and sought after, and because of that can get away with almost anything, and they know it.
@jens During college, the ratio is about 5 female singers to 1 male, the ratio gets worse over time, and the majority of male singers are baritones. Big voices (dramatic and spinto) mature decades after college, so by the time a tenor can sing the high profile lead roles, they get insane amounts of money, and on top of that get away with behaviour that would get any soprano fired on the spot.
Names of Nazi collaborators in the Netherlands kept secret for 80 years. 23% of Dutch millennials and Gen Z believe the Holocaust is a myth or that the number of Jews killed has been greatly exaggerated.
