If you're trying to persuade someone to try Mastodon (or Pixelfed, or Friendica, etc), you'll get a lot further explaining them as algorithm-free, ad-free, AI-free, nazi-free conversations, rather than trying to describe a "decentralised protocol" or why "open source" is good.

Mastodon is conversations between real people.

It's sharing.

As a non-rich citizen, you basically only have two levers you can use against the elite: you can withhold your labour (general strike) and you can withhold your consumption (stop buying goods).
These are enormously powerful tools, and governments fear them, as everything grinds to a halt.
Modern elites encourage the creation of a populace alienated from each other, sitting alone in their houses, consuming infotainment in front of the TV/internet.
