@jann I'd guess some contention (ping pong?) on a kernel mutex when 2 threads open sockets in parallel. But adding one line, dunno (except a calibrated sleep()), I'd rather think doing the join before calling open_sockets().

@jann @vegard so is it one of those things like (IIRC) sockets still occupying the port even after closing? Although no idea what it would be (sleepily) waiting for while just creating the socket.
