Marmots are large ground squirrels, in fact they are the heaviest members of the squirrel family.

Depending on the species marmots live in high-altitude alpine meadows, rocky mountain slopes, and open grasslands across North America, Europe, and Asia.

They survive harsh winters by spending several months hibernating deep underground.

They are very social and friendly and make funny noises when they eat 🤩

8 yr old Jo Nagai was raising swallowtail butterflies in Kobe, Japan, when he noticed something odd. The butterflies he had tended as caterpillars seemed to recognize him. When he released them into the wild, they would fly right back to him. Was it possible they actually remembered him?

Jo wrote a letter to an entomologist at Georgetown University, Dr. Martha Weiss. He asked if she could help him design an experiment, and she said yes.

Jo trained caterpillars to associate the scent of lavender with a mild vibration. When the caterpillars became butterflies, 70% of them still avoided the scent. Their brains had been completely rebuilt during metamorphosis, yet the memory survived anyway. Then he bred them.

The offspring, which had never been trained, also avoided lavender. So did their grandchildren. Without ever experiencing the vibration, generations of butterflies inherited an aversion to lavender their grandmother had been taught to fear.

Jo presented his findings at the International Congress of Entomology in Kobe in 2024. He was 10.

A second grader wrote a letter to a Georgetown professor, and together they found evidence that butterflies can pass memories down through generations.

The flooding at the Greenford London subway station has been reduced by around 90% thanks to... *checks notes* ...a family of beavers.

After conservationists reintroduced a group of beavers into a nearby city park, the animals began building dams, and the wetlands they created now absorb and slow floodwater naturally.

City officials had been planning major flood infrastructure works, but the beavers effectively created them on their own — while also boosting biodiversity and restoring the ecosystem around them.

I think the money the city would have spent on anti-flooding infrastructure should go to the beavers, don't you? 🦫 🦫 🦫

The video I shared features several voices, and I'd rather we focus on the excellent points being made, than on the fact that Candace is one of those voices. Whatever her other views, she is standing up against apartheid and genocide, and for that she has my respect.
