Apropos of nothing, I think it might be worth it for American readers to read up on the "Gleichschaltung" - the legal and less-than-legal processes the #Nazis used to take over all parts of the Weimar Republic once they had taken power and concentrated all decision-making processes in the party leadership.

      Gleichschaltung
The Nazi term Gleichschaltung (German pronunciation: [ˈɡlaɪçʃaltʊŋ] ) or "coordination" was the process of Nazification by which Adolf Hitler—leader of the Nazi Party in Germany—successively established a system of totalitarian control and coordination over all aspects of German society "from the economy and trade associations to the media, culture and education". Although the Weimar Constitution remained nominally in effect until Germany's surrender following World War II, near total Nazification had been secured by the 1935 resolutions approved during the Nuremberg Rally, when the symbols of the Nazi Party and the state were fused (see Flag of Nazi Germany) and German Jews were deprived of their citizenship (see Nuremberg Laws). The tenets of Gleichschaltung also applied to territories occupied by the Nazis. Terminology Gleichschaltung is a compound word that comes from the German words ...

It's really depressing to watch the Americans in my feed trying to cope with the fascist takeover of their country, and I do not wish that on anyone.

Some try to figure out the ramifications, some try to chronicle the individual steps the fascists are taking, some are discussing direct action, and some just try not to succumb to despair.

My thoughts are with you, and I can only hope and fight that the same does not happen in Germany as well.

    Again.

One minor difference between #Mastodon and #Twitter that always struck in mind:

Over here, I was _never_ mocked for writing " #Pronouns : He/Him" into my profile.

At Twitter, this happened _all_ the time, especially during political discussions - and often accompanied by comments such as:

"Oh, I see - you are one of THEM!", along with claims that I "would never be a real man".

I may be cisgender, but I found this kind of transphobia to be deeply tiring.

One unique selling point of #Mastodon which we need to push more is how easy it is to move servers.

I mean, how often have you heard about people being scared away from Mastodon because they have a hard time picking a server? This is not a condemnation of their hypothetical lack of technical aptitude - it's just that every other social media platform outside of the #Fediverse makes leaving as difficult as possible. You tie up a _lot_ of your online identity with a specific account, especially if you are a heavy user - and if you decide to leave an account, then you have to give up pretty much all of the connections you have made.

Thus, picking "the wrong server" is something that can trigger considerable anxiety for those who've had to abandon social media platforms in the past - what if they pick badly, and need to start over?

But even a lot of long-term Mastodon users don't know how easy it is to move - not only takes the process a mere half an hour or so, but you can also take all of your followers with you - their servers are notified, and they automatically move their subscription from your old to your new account without having to so a thing!

I think this kind of easy account transferral is almost unprecedented with online services (and I can't think of any other examples - can you?), so it's not surprising that people don't think about this when facing the choice of picking a server.

    New instance, new #Introduction !

My name is Jürgen, and I translate old German folk tales into English - not just tales from the Brothers Grimm, but from the hundreds of other 19th century German folklorists out there.

To date, I have translated more than 600 tales. You can learn more about my project here (and you can get a free ebook version of my first book if you subscribe to my newsletter there):
